Runner debacle

So I would like to add either a runner or carpeting on the bottom of our stairs to prevent slipping. We only have wood treads for the first half of the stairs and the just a long wood piece where the carpeting begins. Should I install a runner over the carpeting that would match the bottom part of the stairs? Or can I just add a runner on the wooden treads? I'm thinking something with a black and white stripe similar up the pic but vertical. If I go with a black, should I stain the railing and the top wood pieces a darker color or wood that look strange with the lighter wood?? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!
