2. Bathroom benches. You don’t have to be beyond retirement to appreciate a bench in your washroom, whether in your shower or at your sink. It permits you to go through your typical routine safely and comfortably. There are many ways to include such a fixture without making it seem as though it’s intended to address a disability. Whether you choose a wall-hung bench that can fold up in tight spaces or a built-in bench, the same principles apply in a wet environment: proper waterproofing and using moisture-resistant materials like teak, cedar or plastic.
1. Curbless showers. Whether you’ll need a walker or a wheelchair to get around, or if your condition simply limits comfortable mobility, a curbless shower makes transitioning in and out of the shower easy and safe. Before you proceed, you’ll want to hire a professional contractor who understands the principles of proper slope on an otherwise flat bathroom floor. You’ll need to ensure that proper waterproofing is implemented under the tiles and make provisions to allow for the drain within your level floor.
Radiant heat systems come in three types. The first, forced-air based (where hot air carries heat through channels in the floor), is rarely ever used in homes. The second, hydronic based, tends to be the most efficient, using hot water to carry heat through a network of tubing. The third type, electrical radiant heating, is often less efficient than hydronic heating, with one major exception (which is entirely dependent on your local power supplier).
Also, radiant heating is much less effective under materials like carpet that insulate the heat from entering the room, so if you prefer a lot of cozy carpet, radiant heat may be too inefficient to be worth it. This is why radiant heat and bathrooms are so often a match made in heaven. The flooring materials typically used in bathrooms (such as stone and ceramic tile), which otherwise can be chilly to bare feet, are the exact materials that will radiate heat efficiently from the heating system to keep toes warm.

Green wall. A bathroom located beside a solid outside wall can easily incorporate floor-to-ceiling windows, and turning that wall into a green wall will make bathing infinitely more relaxing. If your bathroom opens to the neighbor’s fence rather than a brick wall, consider erecting one. Just be sure it meets local regulations and your neighbors’ approval.

8. Shower bases. Gone are the days of boring beige prefabricated shower bases. More and more, I’ve been using shower systems that have modern, clean bases made out of acrylic or porcelain. Don’t overlook other options for your shower floor.
Gorgeous skylights in the bathroom. Remember this!
5. A window in the shower. This is a great feature if done properly. Some things to consider: Choose a frosted-glass panel for privacy and preferably one that opens for fresh air. Next, ensure that there are stone jambs along the entire installation so that this area is watertight. Also, ensure that the sill gets sloped down and away for proper drainage. Lastly, I always specify a tilt-and-turn window in a shower, because the screen is located on the outside of the window; the handles are plastic, so they won’t rust; and the window provides full privacy even when tilted open.
4. Wall-hung toilets. These fixtures have grown in popularity lately, and for good reason. They no longer break the bank, and they also save space since the tank is hidden behind the wall. But there is a big consideration with these special fixtures. Because of how these toilets drain, if you ever change your mind and opt for a floor-mounted unit, you’ll have to rework the supply.
1. Plumbing. Residential plumbing typically uses 1½-inch pipes for drains. You’d be surprised how much gunk and hair goes down that drain. The larger the drain, the less likely it is to clog. The cost difference to upgrade to a 2-inch drain is practically negligible, and unless your framing doesn’t allow for it, you should consider increasing the drain in your shower to 2 inches. Also, If you live in a region where temperatures drop below freezing during the winter, it’s important that your water supply lines don’t get routed through an exterior wall.
Nice mix of traditional and modern.
4. Black window frames. What better way to bring attention to one of the most important things in your house than with a dark, bold frame?
5. Dark grays look best with light or medium wood tones. If you choose a dark wood, the beauty of the gray and the wood might get lost. If you must use dark wood, choose a lighter shade of gray. And by the way, dark woods look fabulous with beige.
Interesting idea to use tall sconces beside the mirrors instead of overhead lighting. I like it.
Large-format tiles. “They have the benefit of creating a seamless spatial illusion, and they make cleaning a breeze with few or no grout lines.”
A coat rack in the bathroom is a good idea.
Metals with matte or satin finishes will be especially popular next year, Dee says. “Brushed stainless steel [faucets] and brass will take over. People are getting over the bright, polished look.”
Love the lighting, counter top, drawer pulls, and tub.
