Cang Xin’s Communication is an ongoing piece that began in 1996. Engaging with the world at large with his tongue—one of the most intimate and sensitive parts of the body—Cang’s performance represents an internalizing of knowledge and a religious communion with place/person/thing. This exploration of phenomenal reality is largely based upon the Buddhist idea that there is a unity between the self and the the world around us. Available only on Artspace, this limited edition print documents the course of Cang Xin's Communication Series 2, the artist's most well known performance art to date. In this highly-evocative sequence of 54 images, we see the artist licking an assortment of symbolic items related to China and its history. The meaning and cultural significance is left for the audience to decide.
