Painted wall detail from new york city streets. also available in size 16 x 24 inches, in edition of 15. edition start at 1. price: $350.00. shipping cost in the u.s. $25. fresh off the plane after living in my native south-america for more than four years, my soul and heart were brimming with love for lina, my wife, and the bright colors and luminous light of the tropics were still fresh inside my eyes, my mouth, my heart. and i got to thinking if it would be possible to depict new york city as a bright and colorful place. because that is exactly how i was feeling inside at the time. i grew up in new york city, and except for the brightly-colored, moussed-up 80s, it is hard not to imagine the city as a haven for dark colors and shades of grey and black that fade in summer or deepen in contrast during the long, colder months. following the 9/11 tragedy, the city has felt, over a long stretch of years, as if it had a perpetually-black, rainy cloud hanging over it, darkening the colors of every building, man, woman, child, bridge, hotdog stand, or passing car. so, while i was scouting locations for a portrait shoot i was doing in the late spring of 2011, i found a few painted-over walls in brooklyn in what looked like a ruined building. and i have to honestly confess that i am as unconsciously drawn to color and bright light as a starving bee is drawn to a nectar-filled, white wild indigo flower (i googled what are bees fave flowers, and that one came up. ha!). i went home that week and looked at the weather online and picked the sunniest day on the calendar and showed up at those walls around 11amsh for the brightest possible sun. i used a small diffuser to soften the bright-sun rays and even the light, and my hardy and loyal macro lens and beat-up tripod, and these are the images that i hope can brighten your home or office with all the love and wonder that on...
