This is an abstract painting built using multiple layers built up over multiple weeks, which is evident by the significant texture. I use a specialized tool I built using large sheets of plexiglass and various other tools to apply paint and scrape it away as the layers are built, a technique first made famous by Gerhard Richter. While the painting is completely abstract, I used the idea of a landscape to inform the structure and color scheme, and the metaphor of a muddy field about to be planted. This is why I gave it the name "planting."

About the artist:

I'm a Washington, DC based artist and typically focus on doing commissions for large scale abstract art. I've been fortunate to have had a number of shows in the past year, including one at Sotheby's, and I'm very happy to be supporting my friend Ethan from UVA as he launches this great company, which fulfills a definite need in the marketplace for artists.
With my paintings, I've focused on large abstract pieces that are often connected with reality in some way either through specific photographs or the general metaphor of a landscape or seascape. The techniques I use are inspired by Gerhard Richter first developed the idea of "abstrakt bild" by using large tools to apply paint and scrape it away as layers are built up over time. You can see this in the gestural creation in each painting, but there is also a great deal of structure and balance of both shape and color.
