EW: Many tend to love the idea of a two-story great room, but are intimidated by the ceiling height. Can you give us a few words of advice when tackling tall rooms?
CE: 1. Unless you have a great art collection, use painted moldings throughout to add depth to walls.
2. Dress tall windows in full height drapery panels.
3. Create a welcoming seating area to encourage conversation.
While many shudder with the thought of totally white walls, they can actually work to your benefit when trying to keep a space bright. Keep your room from appearing too monotone by accenting the white walls with pieces that pop, like this gorgeous navy couch.
The main living room's high ceilings are emphasized by long window treatments, subtle trimwork and the large painting that extends high above the mantle. Toile on the contemporary chairs is a nod to traditional style, while the zebra rug and perfectly clipped topiaries add some pop pizazz.
Navy and black. Pairing black with a vibrant, dark blue will give your space a luxurious feeling. Here, gray accents give this space even more swankiness.
Blue and black. An often overlooked but absolutely valid combination, blue and black makes people stop and think. Prabal Gurung employes it to great effect in this fall look, and I think it translates beautifully for the home. (dont look at the room itself) Try to see nothing but the colors in this room...white walls, black and white decor, and a punch of an accent color, in this case blue!
