I absolutely love this floor! Is there any way or anywhere to get samples? - I am an interior design student putting together a project and would love any advice or help on how I could get a hold of some type of this flooring. »
rea714 Yes! Please share! We have tree trunks we have cut and are preparing to split. I love to convert natural elements into usable items. I work with cork and wood and make the most wonderful things. I need to learn More...More...More!
out of business? - Is Birer Juell out of business? The floor is a great idea and I've seen such the same thing in outdoor areas but these are custom? Link to store did not work nor did internet search. »
Emily Hurley Hi there, I just did some googling and it looks like the owner of the company passed away, so it could be that the business is now gone. Will do some more investigating. :(
Adhesive and sealing - I would like to do this outside on a deck. what type of sub surface should I use? then what adhesive and sealing should I use? Thank you. Jan »
jughandle You most definitely would need to install it on a cement board substrate. The wood should be pre-sealed with an exterior grade clear sealer until it won't absorb any more. The glue would need to be an exterior grade mastic that will remain flexible after it dries, then grouted with An epoxy grout or a normal exterior grout with an admixture in it to also remain flexible. I would use the same technique inside or out for a durable installation.
janccoy Thank you. The house isn't going to start until next spring, and I am not really sure where I am going to use this application, but I love the floor and it will go somewhere, although it will be a smaller application. I would love to do an outside deck, but maybe that would not be a practical use. I might try it on an entry to side porch.

Sonya Stephens-Ruru Wow, we have a batch up in the bush, this would suit our batch perfectly...especially also as my hubby and I cut manuka wood...what a unique idea...
Vanessa Brunner Isn't this floor gorgeous? I did a bit of digging, and the only information I could find was from Birger Juell's site (http://www.birgerjuell.com/). They say that all of their cobbleblock/cobblewood floors are made from pine, oak, and mesquite in new and reclaimed timbers. The pieces are squared off, sliced cross grain, hand beveled, hand sanded, triple oiled, and then installed with grout. I've also found a few other examples of their work online, where they finished this flooring with a wax sealant. Hope that helps!
Americana at its finest, this rustic flooring from Chicago-based Birger Juell is almost like a modern day tribute to the log cabin. Each of these "tiles" is a cross-section from the leftover ends of a tree trunk or branch. Although each round is sanded and then oiled for protection, the natural wearing of the wood still allows for occasional minor splits and cracks, which only adds to the floor's personality.
