Sue Strommen Some decking materials have gutter-like systems that carry the water out to the edge. That is likely why you see the overhang front and side over the porch below. Trex, for instance, has a system.

Have actually used Trex (no gutters) to replace the flooring in a 101-year-old lake cottage, screened porch that is 40' wide. The original Douglas Fir finally gave up after all those summer storms & MN winters. Good product.

I believe its common to install and underdeck drain to accomplish this, but, in my experience, you are correct, there are lots of gotchas as it relates to building permits and design.
