Refreshing greens. Green is the backdrop of all gardens, yet with a careful choice of plants it can make a wonderful color-theme planting. The foliage in this border is both soothing and refreshing and makes me think of the traditional temple gardens of Japan.

The combination of hostas, ferns and grasses in this photo provides layers of texture that create visual interest, even though there are no blooms.

A green garden, which depends on foliage rather than blooms to provide the color, can still be surprisingly complex. Even within the single-color guideline, you'll find foliage and flowers that range from yellow to gray and everything in between.

Shady woodland gardens are one of my favorites to design. Their success depends largely upon combining interesting foliage textures and playing one shade of green off another. This design beautifully partners Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola') with assorted hostas, astilbes and ferns. The result is a soothing medley that will thrive in partial shade, in average to moist soil, in zones 5 to 8.

Glenna Partridge Garden Design The plants in this border are: front row - a collection of hostas (the larger leaved plants) the grass is Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’, the mass of green under one of the hostas is Soleirolia soleirolii (Common name: Baby's tears), the little gold plant is golden oxalis, a fern (I have to look up the variety I put in...can't remember the latin name right now). In the back row I put in Tricyrtis (Common name toad lily). Acanthus mollis , and an evergreen azalea (can't remember the variety). I'm not sure if you can grow hostas in all of Georgia....here's a link to a site that gives you specific information for growing hostas in parts of Georgia. http://www.gahosta.org/
