This works great in any size room. A client just painted a small windowless powder room off black (bm black jack) ceiling and all and it looks fabulous! All the attention goes to the accessories and you don't even notice the size. The sparkly chandelier and gold mirror pop right out. Wish I had a pic...

I wish you had a picture too! Thank you so much for responding. I have been thinking about a chocolate brown or slate color so I will check out the BM black jack.

I have many painted ceilings in my house. Works particularly well in rooms without crown moulding and rooms with dormers. Same wall color is placed on all surfaces as ceiling is considered the 5th wall. Gives bedrooms a cozy feel. I learned from a color expert that "a light color will never come to life in a dark room but a rich, deep colour can make a dim, somber space feel warm and luminous – even though it receives no natural light."

I'm reading these posts with great interest. I am renovating a house with low ceilings (7'3"). I have been looking for options to make the WHITE ceilings less noticeable. They are also heavily stippled (someone stuck in the 70s lived here before I bought it last year), so I am scraping and intend to repaint with texturizing to minimize that.
ANy opinions on options for a low ceiling?

How about a darker color at the bottom w/ wainscoting or under a chair rail and a lighter color on top?

My 5x7 hall bath is Benjamin Moore's Black Bean Soup w/ white tile, tub & toilet, beige floor, Expresso vanity counter and glass vanity top & sink - the super-darkness of the walls and ceiling in this tiny room makes them recede and the bright fittings pop out at you.
IMO - Either go all the way or don't do it at all.
