Love the design - is there a matching "wall" (the one by the desk) on the other side? - Love this design - we have 12' 4" to work with - one end has a 24" deep refrig and would need a wall or refrig panel, the other end we are thinking of leaving open so the wall and ceiling would form an L in order to have a large enough island - or at that point would you do a penisula? »
rent10128 Thanks! I thought the wall we can view in this photo is flush with the desk - in other words there are two matching "walls" and two equal doorways on either side of the island? (to left and to the right)
Tiare Noelani Cowan, CKD, Allied ASID I purchased this from the container store which is no longer open. Try Bali Boo in kailua or michelle's Bali Design on sand island she can get anything made in bali for you if you take her the photo.

Would it be weird to have this type of two-sided glass upper cabinetry in an area that is visible from the front door and divides the space from the kitchen into the dining room? »
Tiare Noelani Cowan, CKD, Allied ASID I am a visual person, if you send me photos i could better answer your questions. You can email me at tiare@archipelagohawaii.com. bepsf I think that adding built-in cabinetry to your dining room is an excellent use of your limited space - having the center section recessed will allow for space to move chairs in the center of the room while the deeper storage at the ends will allow for larger pieces to be stored there.
Even with maple for the exteriors - you might consider a white or pale blue or green for the interiors to help brighten it up. I'm sure you have a local cabinetmaker you trust so I expect it will turn out quite well!
Cabinet size? - Hi, could you please tell me the size of the cabinets? We are getting rid of a wall in between our current galley kitchen and the dining room, creating an island, and are thinking of putting cabinets like these with glass on both sides above the island hanging down from the ceiling with a 3in molding on top. The idea is to retain extra storage for our glassware while still allowing an open feel and free flowing views and conversation between the kitchen and dining room. We have 8 foot ceilings, and I am 6'1" (73 inches). 24 inch cabinets with a three foot molding come down to 72 inches above the floor, which seems to be a little too close to my eyeline. We were thus thinking about 21 inch cabinets. Do you think this would work? Thanks! »
4. Let flow meet function. If your kitchen is feeling closed off, replace any upper-cabinet wood doors with glass to provide an open and visual transition from one room to the next.
