Every painting must contain a mystery. My canvases are in effect relief sculptures, adding depth, casting shadows within the composition. My recent interest in highly textural surface treatments lends a sculptural quality to my work. The canvases are heavily textured relief images often utilizing multiple stages of thick organic impasto gesso/Carrara marble/canvas build-up, sanded between each layer. All Marble dust is accumulated from my stone sculpture. The recent studies address 'Geologic Landscapes', often resulting in 'Geologic Illusions'. During their final stages, the canvas patinas are rendered in metallic pigments resulting in highly reflective luminous light-play, dancing on images of glittering textured stone formations. All of my canvases are gallery wrapped with painted edges, with no need to frame, sealed, acid-free, and archival.
