60+ and my favourite colours are black, white, grey, wood and stainless steel. I like brick and concrete too, so I'm a fan the modernist style I grew up, but don't like to see it overdone.

My ideal place would be mostly white with pops of bright colours, or Scandinavian style. Right now I live in a work in progress a bit in the style of pic #3 or what someone called a "starter home". My furniture is a mixture of thrift store finds (real wood and solid recovered 40's, 50's and 60's pieces) and IKEA. My favourite piece is a chair my aunt and uncle bought new in 1949. It's so comfortable I used to fall asleep in it doing all-night study sessions while in university. I've had it reupholstered three times (to cats, it's an irresistible scratching post) and moved it thousands of miles.

I've been decorating this way for about thirty years after finally getting rid of the dark Victorian pieces in my real starter home. Back then, everyone was buying new furniture so I could get the Victorian stuff quite cheaply. These pieces were well-crafted solid wood, bought out of necessity - didn't have the money for "real" furniture - and sold for several times what I paid for them.

Wallpaper is up there with wood panelling and wall-to-wall carpet as things I avoid. They're just visual clutter

I'm overwhelmed by the sophisticated comments above. I started my room design life at age 13, led by a beautiful set of bold, flowery curtains in the mid-60's, not with the wild bright orange wall paint I wanted, but the somewhat subdued orange my mom suggested. Dad had a fit! But, it wasn't his teen dream room, was it? And up until very recently, I've always had wall colors that complemented my fabric choices. Having learned to sew and fall in love with fabric and texture first, that always leads. So, when I make something - curtains, an ottoman cover, a pouf, a duvet cover, it's always fabric first. Then," Honey, we need to paint the room" - usually in a "newtral" shade in the bright fabric. Now, I am following the "grey" trend, however, it's only because we know we'll have to get the house ready for sale in a few years. AND, using great paint makes a huge difference! But what do I know? I'm an accountant.
