Business Description
Debora Carl Landscape Design was founded in 2000 with a mission of designing outdoor living spaces appropriate to California's Mediterranean climate, utilizing distinctive materials and accessories, and emphasizing drought-tolerant , low -maintenance plant selections. Our team creates designs that are sensitive to the lifestyle of each client and to the unique character of each home and site.

Our design process is simple. We work closely with our clients to create a living environment that reflects and enhances their lifestyle, while incorporating elements that highlight existing features and space. We work directly with architects to thoughtfully integrate indoor with outdoor spaces, connecting each home with its garden.

Since our founding, our work has been featured in numerous publications and garden exhibitions, including Sunset, Garden Design, Better Homes and Gardens, San Diego Home and Garden, Luxe Interiors & Design, Riviera Interiors and more.

We treat each project as an opportunity to create a new, exciting, and unique design. We hope you will join us in this experience.

It's refreshing to see something different than a lawn and use materials that are sustainable and permeable. It reminds me of a project I photographed for A Yard and a Half. The designer is Barbara Popolow. It was featured in Organic Gardening magazine.

Can't speak to the issue of heat of the rubber mulch/chips in full sunlight...my pergola is pretty much shaded except for early afternoon sun. There is no rubber odor though.

The CMU is 8"d x 4"h x 16"l concrete block, that is sand blasted with coarse sand upon completion to expose the aggregate in the block. It is a great retaining wall/free standing wall material and finish.

The concrete is sand finished uncolored concrete. The three strips are a precast concrete paver from Arto - their Roman paver in color 'Smoke' . The concrete is formed and poured with a depression that is then filled with strips of the charcoal colored paver on both top and sides of the concrete pad.

The plants are actually planted at the base of the address wall- they are red kangaroo paws. The address wall is 1" x 6" cedar, stained with BEHR 'cordovan brown' semi-transparent stain.

Thanks so much. It looked like you can see the little lines on the boards, so I thought it was PT, but I guess not!

Yes, the natural gas fueled fire element was custom built with horizontal ipe slats, and honed black granite slab top and toe kick. All of the finishes were wrapped around a concrete block base.

The gray green plants in the foreground are Helichrysum petiolare,or Petite Licorice- it is a very well mannered low filler/ground cover. The plants to the left in front of the stucco wall are Dianella caerulea - Dianella 'Cassa Blue'.-a distinctive, compact, soft blue, medium-textured, strap-leafed perennial to 18 inches tall by as wide.

The fence is built with varies widths of Ipe ( a sustainable hardwood that is ideal for exterior applications). In this case, we ripped ( cut lengthwise) 1" x 6" slats into various widths and then installed them horizontally, with slight gaps between boards. Ipe can be purchased from many lumber and hardwood lumberyards.

Hi Lizziebet12

Like debora carl landscape design said, that is Ipe. The varying widths was a great choice for that visual appeal. We carry a wide variety of Ipe in stock. You can always give us a call or send us a message and we'll help you out.

The gold colored plants are Sedum nussabaurmeran, an easy to grow succulent. The bronze grasses are Carex testacea or Orange Sedge. Both plants require little water and care.

This is 2" x 4" redwood set on edge and secured with redwood stakes (inserted with the tops below the gravel ) and wood screws. The redwood and stakes can be purchased at a lumber store.
