Something is telling me to keep the dark color couch. You can get a taller lamp and some light color pillows.

Margo I didn't say keep them both. I just stated for some reason that I like the darker colored couch.

I'm going to get in trouble here but someone's got to say it- the dark sofa is wearing her LBD and she's sitting with a rumpled used car salesman. I dislike the pull-together look because I think it's a cop-out for good design but sometimes it can be pulled off. I don't think this will fly.

@Natalie-I'm generally not into delicate seating, but that is a sa-weet looking chair.

I agree with @Decorative Philosophy-pick a style and build around it, but one or the other should go.

If you like the style of the sofa, and the color is what you can't pull together try a slip cover.

Most of the time it will be cheaper in the long run to pay a designer to help you with ideas. Then you will have a concept to follow for the rest of the time you are in your new home. You can add to it as you go.

Congratulations on your new house. You are right about the landscaping needing a little TLC. I suggest you trim the shrubs so that they reach one foot below the window sills. In spring, you can see what blooms. In the fall, you can plant a couple sacks of bulbs (for sale at $25 for 75 daffodil bulbs) in clumps along the front border. Paint the door a marigold yellow or some other bright yellow that looks good with the pale yellow/off white house. In spring, you can plant new shrubs after you see how the older ones are doing and if they need to be replaced. It's a good idea to live in a place for a while before making major changes, so if you can get by with touching up the current paint, try that. There are always unexpected expenses after you move into a new house. Community colleges often offer extension courses that may cover the basics of landscape design.

It's a little to late, but I would have used the same house brick on the stoop and the steps. The columns could have been more of a light color ledge-stone.

We took off brick pavers which were thin and cheap. basically the porch fell apart. we like the pavers we picked out for the stoop and walk but the airstone my wife picked out for the sides is our disagreement. we've stopped construction until we can come up with a solution. either some sort of porch or covering over the door that uses the same airstone or replace it with something else.

Living in Michigan, this will all be covered in snow in a few months.
That's why I love evergreens.
But I will be swinging until then.

Looks really nice. Now all you need is a paver drive and walkway.

Very nice! I especially like what you did with the exterior. Are you planning to add a path of some sort to the front entrance? I think it would add even more to the already excellent exterior.

Any ideas on how to get a fresh smelling dryer? Seems after drying all the "guy" shirts...the dryer smells like old socks.

Oxford007… Love the comment about stocking up the bar! And, Laura, you're right about making the family room cozy. That's my goal this month: we've got dark tile, dark walls, and dark cabinetry, so warming it up is a challenge. I've got a start with red sofas, silver shag area rugs, and silver throw pillows.

It's worth it. That little strip of grass gives the whole area carractor. It softened up the area. They can get a reel mower instead of power to cut the grass. It goes with the whole natural them.
