Great ideas! I would also add that if you are lucky enough to have an original mosaic floor (as the large majority of Victorian & Edwardian houses in the UK would on the entrance hall and corridor towards the back of the house) then restore it and maintain it - the patterns and colours bring so much interest to the space and draw attention to itself.
