Apartment 46 for the Home YAY boulders! A week ago the stone yard delivered a giant boulder to my client's house and my landscape team showed up to move it. They forgot their dolly. The three of them stood around conversing about how "impossible" it would be to move that thing up a set of stairs, over a brick retaining wall and into place. I said, "Seriously? It only took ONE guy to drop it off!" Needless to say my three guys had that rock in place after an hour of seriously strenuous work. :) Only when it was in place did I tell them it weighed 480 pounds. It was the missing link in that beautiful landscape. Boulders transform any garden. I am happiest climbing the Sierra stone at Lyngso near my house. I love when they tie little red ribbons around the giant rocks I have lovingly chosen. It just feels kind of cool!

acadie In my experience, boulders look best when they appear rooted in the landscape. Years ago a landscape designer told me that at least a third of any large boulder should be buried. Also, when using smaller boulders as edging avoid a bowling ball look by incorporating some boulders with a flat (or flattish) side facing out. Also avoid creating an edging with a row of boulders of wildly varying colors.

Margie Grace - Grace Design Associates Local Santa Barbara sandstone. I'd recommend using your local stone if it's suitable to get the "sense of place" that local materials bring to a project. Best of luck --- post photos if you wind up building a bench of your own!

Phantom Screens What a great article that highlights all that is so good about outdoor living and entertaining! We have been fortunate to provide our retractable screens for many porches, verandas and other outdoor living spaces throughout the US & Canada - there`s nothing worse than having to deal with glare and biting bugs when trying to enjoy a summer evening get-together. The best part is that you can completely retract our Phantom screens so they stay out of sight when not in use - a perfect solution that blends with any design style and color scheme.

marjie1059 bkeith, you have given me hope in maybe being able to do something myself with stone on our very uneven ground, as well as what to do with the large foundation stones at the edge of our hill left over from a kitchen foundation redo (necessitated when the old one proved woefully inadequate). I'd love to see a post from your on your projects and how you did them. Great pictures that illustrate well what you have been able to do.

Blue Ocean Studio looks like wooly thyme. Slow growing blue-green soft texture. Don't think it would hold up under furniture and a lot of walking. It takes too long to grow back

ctlg The wall panels are (I think) the grovert - suppliers are listed on the designers site at www.brightgreenusa.com

Apparently they come with wall brackets and drain downwards - I've seen pictures of indoor installations as well.
