There is a full basement under the building - dirt was removed to build it. Not much soil was moved for landscaping purposes. There wasn't any lawn to remove, it was mostly overgrown ornamental plants and weeds.

Hopefully this help. Spent almost $600 on this sideyard. I can give you plenty of ideas but, I need to know the size, what you want to use this area for, if you want a rock or grass area, it really all depends on various types of things.

It's real wood --- a naturally shaped tree root (teak). Nature does a better job than we could ever do!!! You can find a source by searching for "tree root bench". I found this link: http://www.indonesiateakfurniture.com/teak-root-furniture/teak-root-bench/teak-root-bench.html

@skyval: Sometimes, rather than making a veggie-only front yard in typical veggie-box layout it better to just sneak in the edibles in an ornamental way. Voila! The blended garden is the perfect solution. (Sometimes an end-run is less work than a face-to-face confrontation when it comes to a difference of opinion. And if it's a win-win solution, who is there to complain? Get your veg on and make it beautiful!)

Does anyone know how you can grow vining plants in smaller spaces. Will a squash work on a tomato cage in a large pot? I like the picture of the watermelon under the hollyhocks. I love hollyhocks & I plan to put some out soon. Any other ideas for watermelon & pumpkins? Can their vines be loosely wound around something circular like a birdbath or tree?

I have a decent sized plot of land, but I also have a large yellow lab who likes to pee on anything higher than ground level and lay on anything that has even a small amount of bare dirt. I'm trying to plan smaller beds & in pots so I have less space to guard from him. Usually sticks struck in the ground keep him from laying on my flower beds. I also always leave him a bare spot at the end (with a big trellis separating him from any plants) so he can lay in the dirt. Raised boxes may be a solution in the future, but I just don't have time to get them ready this year.

The client purchased the table and chairs at Paradise Imports, 101 Garden St, in Santa Barbara, CA. Phone: 805-963-1100. You could give them a call to learn their source. Or maybe they'll even ship! Good luck.

That is a New Zealand Flax (bronze-colored sword-like leaves). There are lots of varieties to choose from -- varied colors, heights, habits. I don't recall the name of the variety used here.

@ Bo Dellbrook: This is about 18' long and built of our local sandstone; it also acts as a retaining wall and so is much taller than it looks (about 5' high) on the back side. It was around $12k to build.

This is an antique painted wood door with iron grill. It was made for exterior, but was in poor shape. Our carpenter took it apart, re-glued it and had it painted.

The rocks are granitic - imported from the foothills of the Sierra Mountain Range in CA. They were purchased at Santa Barbara Stone in Santa Barbara, CA. They already had the moss on them.

This is "meadow" planting of low water use native plants that are on the "okay to use in high fire risk areas" list. The site sits in Coast Sage Scrub plant community; seed selection was tailored to our site. Go to the website for S and S Seed (Carpinteria, CA) and use their excellent plant catalog; there are also very knowledgeable people on staff that can help you create the right mix for your site, soil, exposure, etc. I see the following in the photo: Tidy Tips, a variety of Lupine, Farewell-to-Spring, California Poppy. I don't recall the grasses off the top of my head, but one of my criteria for selection was that everything in the mix needed to occur naturally in the adjacent wild land so that I wasn't introducing anything that wasn't already present in the existing ecosystem.

The water feature was made with old stone column caps salvaged on site. The caps were drilled with a central hole and stacked. Tubing runs through the central holes back to a recirculating pump that sits in an underground basin. Water runs through the tubing from the pump, spills over the stone caps and through rounded beach pebbles back into the underground basin. Post photos if you wind up making your own fountain! Best, Margie

@steventon: the flagstone comes out of Oklahoma (it's called Cherokee Creek or Sweetwater here in Santa Barbara - but I've heard other names elsewhere). The flags are dry-laid and the joints are 3/8" Del Rio gravel (comes out of the Santa Clara, CA area - it's a rounded granitic gravel).
