My husband made my cold frame for me. It's practical and inexpensive. We got the perspex Plexi glass) cut to size at our local hardware store. He also built my tuteurs for me after I took some pictures of some I saw in a country store at home (England). A little piece of my home here in the deep south. Huntsville AL.

It's cold all year round in the Shetland islands, where there are glass, aluminum framed greenhouses and polly tunnels (polethene sheeting over large hooping, to the extent of size that you'd easily park a couple of cars in there) and raised (seasonally covered) beds.
If you can grow it in Shetland, you can grow it anywhere, although there are often heaters in greenhouses for the darker months.
Now, if only I could find out how to get some Shetland Kale state side..
