All of our homes are custom designed for our clients and specific properties. We built this 6,000+ square foot home in 2007 and happy to hear that it still captures so much interest 10 years later. Our suggestion is that you take this photo to a trusted custom builder in your area and have them work with you and their architect to design a home that meets your family's needs and budget. This photo is a great place to start as inspiration. There are many other things to consider when designing a house including your local building requirements and setbacks as well as considerations for window placements to take advantage of sunlight or views.

My house is barn red at the moment. But next spring we are getting the siding done. We are going with fiber cement siding. James hardie. I believe the color we picked out was called mountain sage. It's a medium green. My parents just got their roof done a few months ago and went with the weathered wood also, they have a gray/blue colored house.

Weathered Wood is a very common roof shingle used on custom homes. I would assume that is what was used on this home. Several manufacturers have a product in this color.

We were hired as the architect only for this home. Depending on the selections and regional differentiation for material cost, I would estimate approx. $180 per sq. ft. At 5,200 SF that would be about $936K plus land.

  • PRO

Yes, the dormer would be a nice feature over a garage to the right of the porch. Depending on the size of the garage you might consider multiple smaller dormers centered over single garage doors, or a dormer similar to the one shown centered over a double door.

No, I have not seen pavers painted before, but I am sure it can be done. My concern with painting them would be the maintenance with the heavy traffic on a driveway. You may want to try speaking with a concrete contractor about staining or acid washing the pavers.

It depends on how the village determines building height. Some measure to the peak, some measure to the midpoint, and some have complex calculations from various reference points. This home had to meet a 40' max. peak height and a 35' max. mean height. This home measured approx. 38'-9" to the peak and 29'-9" to the mean from grade at the front.

The size of the windows are dictated by whether or not they need to provide a means of egress for the particular room they are in. Typically for a double hung style window to meet egress they would be 3'-0"W. x 5'-0"H. The double wide windows in the second floor are egress windows in bedrooms while the middle windows on the first floor are the egress windows flanked by skinnier windows approx. 22"W.

The lattice work in the upper window is an add-on grille pattern that some window manufactures have as an option. Depending on what brand windows you have, you may be able to go through the manufacturer or you might have to look at a big box store for a retrofit.

Increasing the curb appeal of your home by redoing your landscaping, painting your siding, or just cleaning up the front elevation may not add value to your home, but it will increase the salability. You may get an offer closer to your asking price if everything appears to be new and clean.

      lolalina
Laura Gaskill added this to Your March Checklist for a Smooth-Running HomeFeb 7, 2013

Clean gutters and inspect your home's exterior. It's important to remove debris from gutters before spring rains and melting snow overload the system — you can hire someone to do this or take on the task yourself (carefully) with a good ladder. Now is also a good time to take a quick walk around the exterior of your home with an eye out for damage that may have gone unnoticed during winter, and if you use storm shutters, now is the time to remove them.Tell us: How are you prepping your home for spring?

      jewetta9
Alex Jewett: Godden Sudik Architects added this to 7 Ideas to Get You Back on the Front PorchJan 31, 2013

Create an inviting walkway to the front door. This will excite your visitors and give your home great curb appeal. Consider using pathway lights for when you get home after dark. Lighting is one of those features many people think about at the end, but it should be an early design decision, since it dramatically changes the feel of a porch. It's easy to just pull into the garage after work and walk straight inside. Start walking through the front door when you get home instead. Not only will you get a little more exercise, but you'll get to see your front yard, too. It will give you the chance to see all the things you've been missing, like that small piece of trash that blew into the bush a month ago.
