The designer I spoke with said he would try to use a minimum of 42" between an island and a refrigerator, or possibly less if the island is across from cabinetry or another type of appliance. If it's across from an appliance, check its specifications to see how far doors/drawers come out when it's open.

Under the stool area there is 1" thick beadboard paneling.
  • PRO
    Mint Design
42" is recommended; 36" is minimum to avoid visual claustrophobia. I design my countertops at 38" height and islands at 34" to 36" for visual as well as a variety in working surfaces. The pillar under the overhang is more likely for cosmetic purposes rather than support given its placement.

The ceiling is a little over 9 feet high, and the kitchen is about 297 square feet. Because the cabinets are customized with individual details both inside and outside, they aren't priced by the square foot, but by each cabinet itself.

could you tell me the size of the mullions with glass doors either side of the mantel please as well as the small ones either side of the cooktop? also is the cabinet that is to the right of the window and beside one of the glass doors hung at an angle? Thank you
  • PRO
    Cameo Kitchens, Inc.
The cabinets with wood mullions and glass on either side of the mantel are 2 feet wide by 3 1/2 feet tall. There's a little over 13 feet from the front of the fridge to the sink countertop. The cabinet to the right of the window was custom-built, so all of the space is used efficiently. The rear of the cabinet meets both the window wall and the mantel wall, and the front is angled. The two small cabinets on either side of the cooktop were actually built as part of the custom wood hood. The sides of the hood are about 9 1/2" wide and extend down from the hood as pull-out spice racks.

I recently inherited what looks like the exact table and 6 chairs. Table has an insert, and there is a matching hutch. All were purchased in the late 60's Couldn't believe it when I saw it on houzz!

Valances. This particular kitchen has two very decorative architectural valances — one over the desk and one over the range. Valances can help cover necessary but unattractive electrical items that might be visible when your viewing height changes — like at the island or adjacent table in this photo. The valance on the range covers the exhaust fan, and the valance over the desk area covers the undercabinet lighting. Valances come in all shapes, sizes and styles to fit any design. The majority are ordered in predetermined lengths and then cut down onsite to fit.
