Add recess lighting. Clean simple look that is modern. In additional it will give off more light that your current fixture. U can also try under cabinet lighting.

1). The most efficient lighting would be to add recessed can lighting (Canadian term "pot lights") throughout the room. This of course would be more expensive than change out the existing light.

2). Consider adding either a monorail system (photo 1) or wire cable system (photo 2). Both Tech Lighting or LBL Lighting brands carry these contemporary styles.

3). If you decide to go to the expense of adding recessed can lighting, you might consider adding hanging low-voltage pendant lighting over the peninsula bar area. I prefer either the Tech Lighting or LBL Lighting brands. Both companies offer a wide assortment of contemporary and more modern options. This would be a good way to add a splash of color. (See Photo 3 & 4).

4). I would also consider adding under the cabinet LED Stick lighting to illuminate all of the counter tops. I like the Hera Lighting or Tresco Lighting brands.

Here are a few inexpensive flush mount styles that could work. I would still add the Under the Cabinet light along with them.
