It depends on your needs and budget, and your design desires. Some wood species, doorstyles, and construction styles are just not available through prefab manufacturers...

Custom cabinets can have a wide range of prices. We first got an estimate for custom cabinets and a complete kitchen renovation from a very reputable, high end kitchen design company. Their estimate was out of our price range, so we subsequently got an estimate for the same kitchen design from a local woodworking company recommended by an architect. The difference between the estimates was almost $20,000 (and we do not have a large kitchen). The local company did a fabulous job. So while prefab cabinets are always going to be cheaper, it may be worth looking into custom cabinets to see if there is an option that fits into your price range.

Many manufactured (commonly pre-fab) cabinets will offer a factory finish on the cabinets that most custom cabinet makers cannot compete with. Also many semi-custom manufacturers are offering features like soft-close drawers and doors standard that can really affect the longevity and feel of your cabinets that may not be a standard offering from a custom cabinet shop. If possible, get a quote from both and have a kitchen designer review the details of both options with you so you understand the differences involved other than just the prices.

Actually, many local cabinet manufacturers compete with the finishes of factory cabinet companies. Usually with your local manufacturer, you can have more input into the finish and other factors that will go into your project. I definitely recommend taking some time and visiting your local manufacturer and see what they can offer, you should be pleasantly surprised!

The real question is where do you live. Some states, like California, where I am, have environmental laws that prevent quality finishes and glues, making pre-fab cabinets a better quality product.

Some local California companies follow regulations using AQMD certified spray booth and equipment that allow them to purchase and use the high-quality Conversion Varnish Finishes. See the AQMD website for more information. It is false that companies in California can't provide these high end finishes. We struggle with changing the uninformed public's perception everyday because that is what the pre-fab cabinet companies want you to believe. Your best bet is to explore your options and be an informed purchaser.
