What about tiling ONLY the foyer (where wet boots will be coming it, etc.) and the eat-in part of the dining area?
Q

You could do a proper 1 step up into the eat-in part of the kitchen, then a step back down. Have the eat-in part on a sort of elevated island.

Oooooo! Stone! I like these two together better than tile.

A pretty thick border between tile and hardwood. Could you do a wide ramp down? Or is that too much?

This is a nice flush transition.

This has the "lip" stepping up into the hardwood instead of up onto the tile, but the lip is significant, as ours would be.

This one is a brown/tan based tile with a borderline tile pattern to ease the transition.

Here's what the "lip" between would be if tile were installed on top of hardwood.

transition from tile to hardwood flooring

This is a slightly more attractive transition from tile to hardwood, but the opening is smaller, only a doorway's width, which is what we'll have between kitchen and LR. Between kitchen and foyer is a wider opening, though.

I like the tiles here--stone, I assume?

I really don't like the transition here from tile to hardwood flooring.
