Decoration
A red Uten.Silo organizer from his childhood home hangs on the wall opposite the sink. It, along with the orange Knoll chair, are some of his favorite pieces in the home. “The stuff from my parents are obviously my favorite pieces because they mean something to me,” he says. “I grew up with them, and they’re a part of my life now.”
Build your palette with shades of the same hue. Once you have a paint color picked for your first room, one simple way to move on is to choose shades of the same hue for adjacent rooms or walls. You can choose a hue from a nearby paint chip, pick the next color up or down on the same paint chip, or even have the same color mixed at the paint store with white added to make a lighter version. The beauty of this method is that, while it will give your home interest and depth, you also can rest assured that the colors will go well together.
The dining area consists of a Fritz Hansen dining table customized by the architects. They replaced a solid marble center and metal base with a custom Corian center and base. A maple extension ring can be added or removed depending on the size of the dinner party. The glass panel in the floor illuminates a family room in the basement.

house-rules wall decal. A fun wall decal or print with a message can be a heartfelt reminder of the things your family values most. Search for “house rules” online — the Houzz Shop is a good place to start your search — and lots of options should pop up, both ready made and custom.
Since the family room is often tucked away from the other, more formal spaces, it is a good place for getting a little more playful with furniture and decor. Try your hand at making DIY dice tables like the ones shown here (just paint dots on a plain cube), or scoop up a funky vintage piece at the flea market.
And if you have pets … choose a richly hued rug in a pattern. A rug with a bold pattern in deep, rich colors is the ideal choice for a pet-loving household, since it will be the most forgiving of spots and stains. Natural-fiber rugs (like wool) are best, because they tend to release stains more readily than some synthetics.

the ability to swap art and video works based on mood. One can live with a painting or video for an hour, or for a month or more. Through apps, users can also see what friends are displaying and choose those, or recommend their favorites. Automatic timers turn the displays on and off, so one’s wall art won’t keep the cat up at night. Electric Objects. New York company Electric Objects launched in 2013 and is taking reserve orders for its $499 EO1, pictured above (at the lower left of the artwork group) and below. The EO1 is a portrait-oriented display with an integrated computer that links wirelessly to a smartphone app or computer. The matte-finish, aluminum-framed screen (23 by 13 inches) includes an ambient light sensor, which automatically adjusts for day and night viewing.
Check 50s modern Series 7 stools. Testimony to the versatility of Jacobsen’s Series 7 chair, there are a number of variations that all differ slightly from the original — one with matching armrests, another with a swivel base, a fully upholstered version and even a pint-size model for children. These sleek, no-nonsense Series 7 bar stools have longer legs for reaching an island top — ideal for family and friends to perch on comfortably (and in the utmost style) at your breakfast bar or island.
magnetic and chalk paint - at the same time. You’ll have the best results on smooth, flat walls and surfaces with a magnetic primer.
special effects. Adding strip lighting or rope lighting to the not-so-usual spots in your home helps to add ambience and inspire awe. The team at OB Architecture added LED lighting in a hidden channel up the stairs of this home in England.
Oversized art. If you have a large piece of art, you don’t need to put much else in your space. Keep the rest of the room simple and sparse, and let the art speak volumes on its own. The art piece at left, hanging in a San Francisco apartment designed by Applegate Tran Interiors, was created by a Vietnamese artist.
Feature wall. Try to do something out of the ordinary for your feature wall. The rest of the room can remain simple if your wall tells a story. This Sydney children’s bedroom has wallpaper that mimics recycled wood with a drywall tree on top, giving the room a treehouse-like feel.
raphics. Does anything make a statement like an oversized or repeating graphic? Vinyl graphics, wallpaper or murals help to create an atmosphere in a room. Here, the black and white Superstar wallpaper by Phyllis Morris makes quite the impression in this eclectic Manhattan apartment’s bathroom.
Dare to be cutting-edge. Complementary colors can be cutting-edge design features, since not many people know how to pair them successfully. In this award-winning New York City loft dining room, purple and yellow make a statement by way of designer chairs and a large abstract painting.
Large area rugs. Even when you have beautiful floors, an area rug makes a perfect anchor to a seating area for that layered, photo-shoot-ready look — but only if the rug is large enough. If it merely floats between the seating pieces instead of tucking fully under, it’s usually better to go without one. Try a custom-cut plain Berber carpet to get a perfectly sized rug without spending thousands of dollars.
Rounded furniture. Even if you live in a house with lots of space, your child will find a corner to bump into. Try to mitigate the damage to your children’s heads, sides and legs by choosing furniture that is rounded, with no sharp corners. There are so many great-looking pieces today that will let you live worry-free for a long time.
Area rugs. Generally speaking, I would recommend not using carpet under the dining table if you have children. But if you really want a rug under your table, then use carpet tiles to create an area rug.

framed quote. This approach adds a modern graphic edge to a space, and it’s less of a commitment than words applied directly to the wall in vinyl or paint. Very short expressions will be easiest to quickly digest on your way out the door and will lend the most graphic impact to the room. Choose something cheeky over a trite cliché.
position a painting, memento or personalized artwork somewhere in the bedroom to remind you and your partner to make your relationship a priority. The framed heart seen here is a subtle but meaningful reminder that fits in beautifully with the old books on the mantelpiece.
Higher hooks are meant for the adults in the house (both the designer and her husband are tall). They are topped with a feature that could be described as an artwork clothesline. “A lot of people want to do a gallery wall for kids’ art or photos. I like the idea too,” says Paquin. “In this space I have wire and pinch clips to keep the latest artwork up. The pieces we deem precious are framed and go on the art wall; the others go in the recycling bin. The art is in constant rotation.”
YES!! "I was reading my Sunday newspaper when I encountered a striking Moholy-Nagy print in the arts section. A minute later, it was displayed on my wall. That’s the moment I was hooked on Electric Objects’ new EO1, a $499 digital art frame that displays art, photos, GIFs and videos found on the Internet, available within the EO1 app or uploaded from your phone or computer. In truth, I was an enthusiast 10 minutes after taking the device out of the box. That’s how long it took to place it on the stand, plug it in, download the app, connect it to my Wi-Fi and start displaying images. This spring I wrote about the development of high-end digital art displays by companies including Electric Objects, Framed, Depict, Meural and Canviz. Being a video artist as well as a writer, I wanted to experience for myself this new way of displaying art. I chose the EO1 as it was one of the first available and most affordable.
