The New Brass
Do you recall the garish shiny brass of the 80's? Brass hardware and lighting fixtures paired with oak trim and cabinetry were the standard selections used by builders in so many of the homes built at that time, as well as commercial spaces.
It has had such a lasting impression on me that, until recently, I would not have considered using brass in design. But all that has changed! The new brass, in addition to all the soft gold and bronze finishes, has a new muted luster which is both sophisticated and warm.
Using these metals in lighting, hardware, art and accent pieces can bring richness and beauty to a design scheme.

A brass side table with bamboo legs is incredibly chic sitting between two taupe chairs. A new trend is to also mix metal finishes in a space. Notice here how the table lamp has a zinc base.
A traditional table lamp in brass lights up a corner of this room in high style. Its smooth surface creates a beautiful contrast against the worn wooden table it sits on.
What is it about brass and bamboo? What a fabulous combination. These striking light fixtures add warm drama above a kitchen island.
Brass accents can be subtle but strong. Here the brass finish on the lamp works beautifully with a citron sofa and shades made from a brass colored fabric.
The brass tones of a wall sculpture and metal branches placed in a vase bring warmth to a cool design.
A pair of tall brass lamps light up an entry perfectly. I love how the lampshades have a metallic glow.
This large expanse of brass, creating a dramatic accent wall, provides warmth and beauty to a modern space. Which is the art here? The wall or that fabulous staircase!
Simple brass hardware becomes the highlight of this cabinet. Mixing brass against black paint is dramatic and made more so with the lines of the cabinet outlined in gold.
And finally, this brass fixture is so stunning it could well be a sculpture. I'll take one for my home please!
