That's a good question. I have used Barkeepers Friend for many years and love it. I use it on the fiberglass on my RV and use it to polish it back to a smooth and shiny luster. The problem you might face is that it will tend to polish the marble surface and thereby reduce the honed look. That could defeat the purpose of having honed marble.

My daughter has honed marble in her kitchen and is going through that same dilemma on her marble counters. Some have been etched by mistakenly using Lysol or allow acidic foods to come in contact with the marble, (i.e. the juice from freshly sliced tomatoes).

If, for some reason, you do decide to use "BKF", do not under any circumstances use the liquid form as it has Oxalic acid in it. Use only the dry powder form.( EDIT: I just read my BKF label and it says BKF Powder also has oxalic acid and is not recommended for 'real' marble!!) I would also apply it and scrub it in using a very fine abrasive pad such as ScotchBrite. Good hardware stores sell them in various grades of abrasiveness. Grey pads are the finest and should only be used.

If you can handle the smell of Comet (aka: bleached cleansers) take a look at this downloadable PDF from Vermont Quarries ► http://www.vermontquarries.com/images/CareMaintenance.pdf

This is mitered. So they angled the side pieces instead of just laminating the edge on the underside.

....the edges are mitered and that is a waterfall effect on either side of the island (where the marble falls off the sides.....lovely)

...apologies but you must ask Melissa Miranda Interior Design as this one is her project....but I would think that the slabs are 1/2" thick.....if you miter the edges and corners....it appears if the slab is 2" - 3" thick....the fooling of the eye is the trick.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Ivon Street Studio added this to Kitchen Counters: Elegant, Timeless Marble
The basics: Marble is a natural stone composed of calcium carbonate; it's in the same stone family as limestone and travertine. Color variations occur in marble due to mineral impurities in the stone. Slabs, rather than tiles, are typically used for countertops, where the dramatic veining can be displayed.Cost: $70 to $100 per square foot, installed.
Marble Kitchen CountersMarble has an unrivaled, classic look that always seems to be in style. For lovers of white kitchens in particular, marble offers more variety than almost any other material. Marble is known more for the patina it develops with use than for its durability. It's a softer stone than granite, and can scratch and stain easily; the cost typically ranges from $70 to $100 per square foot installed.Guide: Pros and cons of marble countertops
