Position of piano - I've seen grand pianos turned several different ways - usually with keys in the corner or keys facing the main room. How do you determine the positioning of the piano? »
Janie K. Hirsch, ASID I do not know if there are rules of positioning from a musical stand point, but we chose a position that we liked in the room where the person playing could be seen from anywhere in the room.
Janie K. Hirsch, ASID Yes you can use too many mirrors in a home. I think that if you spread them out throughout the house, you are fine, but you want to mix in artwork and not have to many in a single room unless they are small and you are making a feature on a single wall.
blanchard I own this rug or one so near I can't see the difference. It is a wonderful warm blue. I found mine at a prominent rug company in San Francisco. I'll see if I can locate more information and repost.
judyg Janie, just came upon your room. It is beyond beautiful. Your design gave me confidence to move ahead with an oriental, Kerman, 1960's neutral, blue, pink, cream. I have chosen BM Sea Star…dark, and I love it even more now that I see you have paired dark walls with a lighter rug.
Janie K. Hirsch, ASID I always line and interline my drapes, but this is a sheer fabric and I wanted it to remain sheer, so there is no lining on these.
I think this room is so elegant with its charcoal-tinged walls and curtains. When paired with a dramatic and dark neutral like charcoal, this coral orange is playful and sophisticated. The look works because it is not a contrived palette; it is bold and brave while maintaining the stately feel of the furniture and piano.
This space is inspiring for a variety of reasons. The bold choice of wall color, unexpected flooring finish, beautiful baby grand piano and impressive art all arouse the imagination.
We should cover the more affluent homes too, where the drawing room was bigger and probably not the only reception room. This size gives you more scope to have a family room with comfy sofas, a TV and books while keeping the traditional use of the drawing room as a more formal adult space too.
floors: after sanding finished with gesso that was thenned with water and was mopped on the floor to get the gray stained finish. If it was thick in any areas, they buffed it down.
