Another quick fix is to train a climbing vine or perennial up and over a simple arch. A morning glory or sweet pea vine can cover this arch in a single season! Though not nearly as impressive as a giant archway that goes far into the distance, a beautifully planted archway will give a sense of protection overhead and create a vista. Again, notice the gate that gives a walker a sense of entrance and protection once they have passed through.

This is a joyful and beckoning path. I want to pass through the arch, skip down the stepstones, nip under that jacaranda tree and see what's back there!

Masterfully executed by designer Shirley Bovshow, this once-ordinary side yard is now a verdant place where the homeowner can stroll with a morning mug of tea.What makes this space special: The vine-clad arbor creates a welcoming doorway. The stepping stones are nicely spaced, so people can even walk here in bare feet. The Mediterranean plantings have a unified, green palette to soothe the eyes — and there's even fragrant lavender, to release its scent when ankles brush by.

Balance the composition. Use symmetry or asymmetry to frame a view that's near or distant, giving the viewer a restful (living) picture to enjoy. You can get a formal effect with symmetrical plantings, such as a pair of columnar conifers that indicate an opening to a garden path. Or use an arbor or trellis, centered over a pathway, as is done so beautifully here. Suggest asymmetrical balance with natural or man-made sentinels of equal visual weight. For example, you can offset a large tree on one side of the view with a grouping of garden furniture on the opposite side. The items may be different, but together they create an appealing balance.
