Sheila Schmitz Depending on how they are sealed and finished, wood countertops can be completely refinished with sanding and new oil. You can use a palm-sander (working with the grain) to smooth the surface. When sanding is finished and the dust cleared, treat the surface with plain mineral oil (or walnut oil if you use the surface for food prep) and a soft cloth.
