Love this fireplace-question about size - Would you be willing to share how big this is? I know pictures can be deceiving(width and height of the fireplace). It looks like a perfect size for a smaller back yard. The ones I've seen so far are considerably taller and wider than what this one looks like.. »
My Outdoor Rooms L.L.C. We can prebuild you one to fit over the garage door. We buil our pergolas out of Cypress and can prestain them. Check out our pegolas on www.myoutdoorrooms.com Look at the pergola over the kitchen. We can do this same style over the garage.
Wood burning fireplaces produce a pretty incredible amount of RADIANT heat once an ember bed is established. The "Grate Wall of Fire" maximizes that effect. Gas fireplaces . . . not so much.
The other unique thing about a single-sided fireplace is that the trapezoidal shape of the firebox reflects the heat in that one direction. Without anything to reflect against, the 360 degree effect of a firepit tends to seem like a lot less heat.
Unfortunately, as sub-visible light, it only heats one side of you, so you might have to move around a little on an especially cold evening to keep your other side from going numb.

What type of lighting was used to illuminate the trees? - We have just installed a pool in our backyard and I am hoping to light up the trees around it to add to the lighting scheme. »
INARAY Design Group I would agree with the Lumiere product and the Hadco as a budget alternative. The real key is the lamp selection based upon the trees you are trying to light (size, type, etc).
Koreman Landscape Company Most manufactures of fire place kits will have info on their websites. Many offer "how to" videos. The most important thing to do when installing a fire place or pit is the base. Make sure you do your research regarding the ground / base preparation.
3. Light and warmth. In addition to physical warmth, fireplaces add a dramatic light and a welcoming invitation to a space. In this garden, the visual warmth of the fireplace is enhanced by applying strategic lighting to the fiery leaves of the trees that flank its chimney. I would happily put on a sweater to enjoy the cozy warmth of this patio.
I like this camera angle and leading up to a firepit. we can create curved edges with our deck pathways, by cutting the deck boards to the shape we desire. Same with the rounded firepit area. As long we we don't show railing on that part, we can round off the firepit area. Maybe show a pergola over the entire deck in the foreground with the string lights hanging under it. Also like how they have ground lighting shooting upward on the trees in the landscape.
