Setting aside a space for exercise is important. These homeowners had enough room for a dedicated exercise room. Even if you don't have the extra room, setting up exercise equipment near a window with a view will make the whole enterprise more enjoyable.

It seems to me that one challenge for many parents is finding a sitter for the kids so they can go workout. Childcare is already so expensive that adding another hour or two seems indulgent. But it's important for parents to make time for themselves and their health. Setting up a little workout spot where you can keep an eye on the kiddos might be the solution.

5. Open and bright in New York. Joseph Eisner and his team at Eisner Design transformed a bare-bones basement into this open, light, and multi-purpose space. The family in Westchester, New York, wanted the space to include room for a home office, a gym, a bar/lounge, a guest bedroom, and a large play area. The design was more about taking away elements than adding them. A large glazed wall with sliding glass doors is located to the right of the home gym. In the initial construction, this was a large foundation wall, which Eisner and his team removed to open up the space.

3. Total basement fitness. Set up a dedicated physical fitness area in your basement to save time and money. Add an adjacent play area to keep a watchful eye on the kiddies while you're working out.
