Combined Westside Apartment

New York, New York | Axis Mundi was commissioned to combine two apartments for a growing family on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

For a busy couple with one child, and another soon on the way, the design team worked intensely to prepare a design scheme which could be executed in record time. One of the main design challenges was to define a very distinct delineation between public and private spaces. Another important element was to create a sense of openness which would allow light to filter in from both sides of the apartment. Both of these goals were accomplished by the creation of a large 6' sliding door that could be closed once the children go to bed, effectively dividing the public from private space.

A variety of texture and materials were used to create a sense of continuity throughout the space. Hand scrapped walnut wood planks were chosen to create a sense of warmth and softness for the floors. A bamboo veneered kitchen was designed, the glass backsplash consists of randomly fused colored glass strips, and is complimented with a concrete colored cesar stone counter.

The main living space is open, and features two seating areas. Important pieces include a Sean Scully print, a pair of lounge chairs by Gio Ponti, black glass rock tables, and a wonderful 1919 leather club chair sitting atop a large cream colored rug from The Rug Company.

The dramatic powder room features a leather door with contrast stitching; the walls are tiled in black stainless steel penny rounds. The freestanding glass sink adds an extra dash of drama. Charcoal grey glass penny rounds were selected for the Master Bath, along with large 2'x4' grey bedonia ceramic tiles. The major feature in this space is the large sliding glass shower door by Magnum, along with an uplift vanity.

Total Area: 1950 sq.ft.
