Celebrating Southern California's mild climate, this hill-top residence was enhanced with an a bubbling water feature, outdoor shower, custom fencing and a Mediterranean plant palette. The fence's design, with its slender vertical lines, draws the eye toward the site's lovely borrowed scenery. An outdoor shower, nestled into a corner of the yard, beckons the homeowners to bath in the open air.

The extensive front slope and driveways plantings were part of a master plan for this property in New Jersey. Over 400 perennials were used throughout. Emphasis was on summer color. Changing textures and heights between groups of plants add to the beautiful effect. This is a rather low maintenance planting design. All perennials needed to be cut down once per year. Over time as the perennials fill in and cover the ground, it will be difficult for weeds to grow. Deadheading will make for a neater appearance, although this is not necessary.

This lush and colorful hillside was once a barren, dry slope full of weeds and briars. We created the river rock stone terraced walls mainly to retain the truckloads of good garden soil that we added so that this hill could be planted successfully. The curved design is very attractive and the rustic style blends well with the log cabin architecture of the house. We also added large boulders nearby. You can see a few to the far right.

This butterfly garden and bird sanctuary is seen here in late spring. Dianthus, verbena, and daisies that are flowering here are combined with other drought tolerant shrubs, herbs and annuals that provide 4 seasons of lush color. Terraced stone walls on this steep sunny hillside retain the garden soil needed and provide access to all 3 levels. Photographer: Danna Cain, Home & Garden Design, Inc.
