Great article! Now how to deal with a husband who cannot understand that the same amount of furniture we had in a large home will not fit into a smaller home. It's like pulling turtle teeth to convince him to get rid of anything! But Habitat for Humanity and Goodwill are are slowly becoming our new best friends. They are both good organizations and appreciate donations.

We moved from an 1850 sq. ft. townhome into a 1000 sq. ft. senior-complex apartment and took this as an opportunity to shed lots of no-longer-loved and worn furniture. My brother, who had also recently downsized told me, "If you bought it 35 years ago at a yard sale for $15, it's time to let someone else enjoy it!" Repeating this to myself as well as asking myself, "Do you really want to spend money to move this?" helped immensely. Also learning to think of how many we needed of an article of clothing rather than whether there was still a wearing left in it helped us shed a lot of wardrobe dross. We ended up getting rid of more than we moved.

When this was initially posted, shortly after my husband passed, I saved it, thinking someday. Well, that someday has finally arrived, and I’m downsizing from 3000 sf+ to under 1800 sf. I’m using all the tips from the years of comments, and appreciate them all.
(And I’m having a santos from Manila made into a lamp. It’s what drew me to the article years ago.)
Great post!
