I actually prefer the look of your rug over the second image. If you think that rug is too vibrant, maybe something like the attached kilim rug (another "search word" when you're looking) from pottery barn. If you have a local Turkish store you can sometimes find beautiful kilim rugs there.

Try one kings lane for rugs also. They are actually having a Turkish/Moroccan rug sale right now, but it is pricey.

I love the Zapotec rugs from Oaxaca, Mexico. You can find them in all sorts of beautiful subtle natural dye colors. I have seen them for sale on eBay.

I think I also need to accent the blue/grey to bring out that shade in the slate tile and offset red/brown of the front door
