HOOKS Recycled Skateboard Wall Hooks, Set of 3 $75 $90
It’s easy to let tool maintenance go — in spring and summer, you’re too busy using them; in fall you’re too busy doing other maintenance chores. Why not clean and repair your tools now that they’re out and before you start using them regularly? At the same time, arrange for needed maintenance of things like lawn mowers. You’ll beat the crowd at the repair shop at the start of mowing season.
WALL COVER??? The dining area is another favorite feature of the homeowners. Loczi designed a canopy crafted of walnut wood blocks to create a showstopping element in the open floor plan. “It’s all about architectural scale and using different proportions,” Loczi says. The canopy delineates a chic dining area and adds texture and movement to the neutral plaster backdrop.

GARAGE DOOR DECOR OUTSIDE Be generous with details around garage doors. They are usually prominent features on a house simply because of their scale. You want to complement your architecture while paying close attention to the scale of other elements on the house. Common Vehicle Dimensions Vans and SUVs: Width: 6 to 7 feet (1.8 to 2.1 meters) Length: 16 to 19 feet (4.9 to 5.8 meters) Height: 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) Large and luxury cars: Width: 6 to 6½ feet (1.8 to 1.9 meters) Length: 16 to 18 feet (4.9 to 5.5 meters) Height: 4½ to 5 feet (1.4 to 1.5 meters) Compact and sports cars: Width: 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) Length: 14 to 16 feet (4.3 to 4.9 meters) Height: 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) Note: Conversions to metric dimensions are approximately translated from standardized U.S. dimensions. Each country can be unique in their standards. Investigate the customs in your locale or work with a design pro before making commitments.
GARAGE CABINETS Garage cabinet systems have similar dimensions to those in kitchens. You can buy base units that are 24 inches (61 centimeters) deep, but some come in depths of 12 or 18 inches (30 or 45 centimeters) as well. Coordinate these with the dimensions of your car, which are easy to find. Go to the manufacturer’s website for your make. Find your exact model and look for the specifications. Write down the overall length and width, including the mirrors. Once you have those, you will know how much space you can use for storage.
Key Measurements for the Perfect Garage This cutaway plan of a large, three-vehicle garage illustrates common dimensions to consider just for cars. Add more space for built-in cabinets or be willing to have a tighter fit. Space between cars: Leave at least 36 inches (.9 meter) between cars so that you can open their doors without hitting another car door. You can go slightly less on side walls, but be certain you can comfortably enter and exit your car. Bumpers or curbs: Having a curb opposite the garage door will keep your vehicles from running into the facing wall. If you make it 4 inches high, it will be low enough so the front bumpers don’t scrape. Even if you have an existing garage with a level floor, you can find bumpers to mount onto the floor to solve this problem.
Garage Doors Width: Single-car doors begin at 8 feet wide (2.4 meters). You can also get 9-foot-wide doors (2.7 meters), which will lessen the chance of scraping the fenders on the door frame. You will sometimes see doors narrower than this in country club developments, but those are usually for golf cart garages; they can be as narrow as 5 feet (1.5 meters). Doors made for two cars can be as little as 14 feet wide (4.3 meters), but are more commonly 15 or 16 feet wide (4.6 or 4.9 meters). Height: The standard garage door height is 7 feet (2.1 meters), but an 8-foot (2.4-meter) height is also available. You can get a custom height for an additional cost. You can also customize your door design for an additional cost.

You never know when a winter storm might challenge your power, so it’s best to be prepared. “Motion-sense-activated and battery-powered LED lights help you find supplies in the event of a power outage and can be easily mounted under cabinets to illuminate countertops, and installed in drawers and closets,” says Kiss. Garage storage
CALIFORNIA CLOSETS Cost: It depends on material selection. “The good news is that garage storage is often less expensive than regular closets, because we usually use simple materials and hardware, and we usually don’t use glass inserts,” says Scott. She says an 8-foot run of open shelving in a garage could cost $1,000 to $2,000 (rough estimate). A row of storage lockers of the same length might cost $2,000 to $3,000.
GARAGE STORAGE Scott adds that it’s also important to choose storage units that are made from durable materials; items stored in the garage are often heavy, so you want shelves that won’t buckle or bend. She also says in the tighter confines of the garage, you are more likely to bump, brush or spill things on your storage system, so an easy-clean material such as a high-grade laminate is often best.
“The garage is definitely the most underutilized space in the house,” says Amanda Le Blanc, a professional organizer (she owns The Amandas in Birmingham, Alabama) and spokesperson for Organized Living. “I prefer the garage to the attic for storage, because a garage actually has less temperature fluctuation.” http://organizedliving.com/home/products/freedomrail-garage.
WIRE MESH SHELVING Spread into the garage. Take over part of the garage to serve as a mudroom. Add “curb appeal,” like address numbers on the door, a freshly painted handrail and a welcome mat. A rack for shoes and outerwear will provide structure, as will a bench. Note: If critters are able to sneak into your garage, be careful of what you store; for instance, dog treats and other food items in cardboard boxes may attract them. You may also want to keep shoes and boots from becoming cozy nests by placing them in plastic bins with lids or in a storage bench.
Coral bark Japanese maple. While less dramatic than the Bloodgood, Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’, or coral bark Japanese maple, is one of Ayers' favorites because of the way it imparts shots of yellow into a yard. USDA zones: 4 to 9 Height: 20 feet Color: Yellow-green leaves and coral bark in spring and summer; the leaves turn brighter yellow in fall; the bark turns a vibrant coral in winter; deciduous Light requirement: Full sun to partial shade Water requirement: Moderate to regular
Bloodgood Japanese maple. Sandy Ayers of The Garden Route Company in California loves the ruby-red tones of Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, or Bloodgood Japanese maple. USDA zones: 5 to 8 (find your zone) Height: 15 to 25 feet Color: Deep red in spring and summer, turns scarlet in fall; deciduous Light requirement: Full sun to partial shade Water requirement: Moderate to regular
Overhead storage. If you're not ready to invest the time and money it takes to build a loft in your garage, overhead storage units are a great compromise. Suspended shelving just above the garage doors provides out-of-the-way storage space without the messy remodel. Use these shelves to store items you rarely need to access — like holiday decorations.
multipurpose bench. An extra-long bench next to a garage door keeps outdoor gear tidy. Hooks, cubbies and a cozy seat make it easy for kids to remember to take off their coats, caps and gloves before coming inside the house.
Keep it going. The key to keeping your garage organized and clutter-free long-term is to view it as an important, useful space, not a dumping ground for random items that you don’t know what else to do with. Clutter tends to breed more clutter, so remember that the next time you are tempted to stash away a few more “good”cardboard boxes, that Christmas present you hate (but are afraid to get rid of) or the broken blender you might one day fix.
