Walled: Medieval street, Fez, Morocco (13th century). Traditional buildings across the Middle East and North Africa were inward looking and surrounded by blank walls, which offered protection from the extremes of their harsh climate. The narrow, winding streets of the great medinas of Morocco barely hint at the beautifully decorated palaces with their inwardly focused courtyards hidden behind their plain exterior mud walls.
Dynamic: False Bay Writer's Cabin, San Juan Island, Washington, by Olson Kundig Architects (2009). Those less settled may opt for something more dynamic and mobile. Others may seek a house with the ability to transform itself depending on the time of day, the seasons or occupancy status by the use of devices such as sliding or folding screens.
