Lynden Door VG Douglas fir is an excellent species for entry doors! The "hardest of the softwoods" is tough and durable; good screw-holding characteristics; resinous - not to the same extent as cedar, etc - but certainly Doug fir is a strong choice for exterior applications; takes and holds stain well; beautiful and quite uniform in vertical grain cuts. VG fir is particularly "millable" and holds fine detail well (see the attached custom Simpson Door example). Fir is photo-sensitive and will redden with age and fade in direct sunlight - so keep sunlight exposure in mind and choose a UV-inhibitor type stain if exposure cannot be avoided.
Unusual doors (exterior and interior) also provide a nice and easy way to improve a space. I recently visited an antique warehouse in Salt Lake City and was most impressed by the line-up of hundreds of old doors, many with unusual structural detailing and windows.
2. Start a no-shoes policy and beef up doormats. Keep dust, pollen and more from entering your house in the first place by encouraging visitors to slip off their shoes at the door. Provide ample interior and exterior doormats to trap shoe muck and a basketful of slippers for guests.
low allergy: no-shoes policy with good indoor and outdoor doormats; hard flooring; blinds or machine washable light drapes; HEPA vacuum with steam; mattress and pillow covers; ventilated closets and bathrooms; change aircon filters
Idea for Foyer 2 bench w cubbies. Bench could span area btwn wall and door frame to closet. Add wall treatment behind bench, perhaps something like this (no window). Add decorator (but functional!) hooks matching lighting, other hardware in area. I may want stained rather than painted.
Reducing allergies.
