Marble does take some care and sealing and I think in a hard living house with kids, I'd pass. Acidic stains (orange juice, tomatoes, coffee) are a pain, although all you really have to do is some maintenance--after all, marble has been around forever and it's a beautiful finish. But I'm all about easy living, so while the kids are young and the livin' is hard, I'd just buy a BIG marble pastry board and put it on top of the island.

Most people are told not to use marble for their countertops but they continuously use it on floors. Floors take more abuse than countertops. The only disadvantage with marble, travertine and limestones versus granite is that they are not acid resistant which means if anything acidic makes contact with the stone it will leave an etch mark on the surface, which is not to be confused with staining. Staining can be prevented with sealer but not etch marks. Granite should also be sealed it is still a rock which means it can absorb liquids also! To reduce the visibility of etch marks on stones such as marble, you are better off using the marble in a matte finish. Remember, the more shiny or polished the marble is, the more you will notice etch marks! Besides, marble is supposed to have character, how is it that it has been used in Europe for thousands of years and no one ever complains about it?
