Selkirk St. Estate

Traditional Kitchen, Vancouver

Photo by: Josh Dunford Frequently entertaining a flock of children and grandchildren, the couple that built this 10-year-old, 10,000-square-foot French Country-style estate in Shaughnessy needed it to work for a plethora of people and purposes, which called for renovation and restyling of key rooms. Offering togetherness amongst an array of family activities, the kick-up-your-feet fulcrum of the home, the great room, combines a large, worker’s kitchen; cinema and conversational seating areas; breakfast table; and writing desk. Anchored by the client’s centuries-old oak table found in France, antique-finished granite, linen window coverings, recycled patchwork rugs and dash of chicken wire befit the casual space. The dining room strikes a more traditional tone, but not without some whimsy—cross-pollinating patterns and a pop of colour to complement the client’s conviviality. A salute to Versailles, the master bedroom is the pair’s private, plush and peaceful retreat. The coved ceiling gets a golf leaf treatment, French Provincial armchair are adorned in silk velvet, drapery is embroidered in Chinoiserie.
