I have an old craftsman with very dark box beam ceilings and trim. Several windows but not a lot of light. I just painted the walls (all 4) BenMoore Marine Blue...now I'm stumped with what to do with adjacent rooms which open to the dark blue room. Any ideas? I feel like I need to lighten things up... Thanks so much! »
TanCalGal Below is Sherwin William’s Arts & Crafts colors with suggested accents (other paint companies might have other chip suggestions?). I like to have my whole house color-cohesive. Let’s say in the living room I chose a dark blue for all 4 walls. According to SW’s A&C palette, Bunglehouse Blue pairs nicely with Indian white and Classic Light Buff or in another chip they pair Bunglehouse Blue with Antiquarian Brown (looks rust-like) and White Hyacinth. So, taking my cue from that, I’d paint adjacent rooms in one of the whites or Light Buff. And in each room I’d have accents of dark blue, white, Buff, and Rust. http://www.sherwin-williams.com/pdf/color_themes/int_arts.pdf
sweethomecolumbia Thank you so much for the great advice! I was thinking along the lines of white but was stumped regarding another color. Great ideas....I will have to post pictures once it's finished. Thanks again for the help! Much appreciated!
Elizabeth Cole Did anyone get an answer to where this slipcovered chair came from? I need a chair this size and shape for a small corner space. This looks like it would be perfect.
Anne DeCocco Start by looking at Ben Moore's Soot/2129-20. In art classes, we were always told to put some blue in our black, for depth. It works well.
Here, the trim and the dark panels provide two ends of a color palette spectrum—many elements in the room pick up the colors that are in between the two, with a few others thrown in the mix.
This is also a great example of how to make the dark walls work with adjacent rooms, as I mentioned in the introduction.
Slipcover pros:
1. Protection. You can use a slipcover to protect a beautiful piece of furniture you want to preserve. Here, a striped slipcover protects a chair in the corner of this casual room.
2. Easy cleaning. Slipcovers can be easily removed for laundering. How many times have you just wished you could throw your sofa in the washing machine?
3. Versatility. You don't have to commit! You can change the look of your space with the change of a slipcover. Many people will purchase two slipcovers in different colors or textures to change out their look with the seasons.
You can't get much more high-contrast than black and white. I especially like how the dark (albeit light-filled) room leads into an all-white room. The walls, ceilings and trim appear to be painted all the same color in the adjacent room, making the black even more special and unexpected without being overwhelming.
Black walls are a bold yet refined move for living areas too — not just coupled with white tiles in the bathroom. Black walls, white trim, white furniture and just a touch of color in accent furniture pieces (such as the red side table) are well balanced and feel comfortable.
The red and white Staffordshire dogs are a surprise element to this room. By placing them underneath the red lacquered table, the designers may be referencing a style without putting it fully on display. The room remains contemporary, with a secret addition of Victorian glamour underneath the coffee table.
White trim makes black walls look crisp and fresh. It's a very classic look and would work in a house with some good bones. When painting a wall black, go for an eggshell or satin finish to avoid an ashy look.
This is an excellent example of what your moulding would would look like if you painted the upper portion the SAME as the ceiling and the lower option the same as the wall. If you look closely you can actually see the raised panels around the window and door that have been painted the SAME as the wall

Cozy spot for reading and contemplating. Unexpected use of black on walls actually seems to dematerialize the space. White and bright colors keep it from being oppressive. The blocks of white are done very effectively.
