are the cabinets custom? if not, what material are they and what color, what manufacturer? we are starting the process of looking into new cabinets/counters and love the whole look! »
maxima The color of the cabinets is posted under another picture. Any cabinet maker can make the same cabinets for you. Just show them what you like. All cabinet manufacturers pretty much offer the same types/styles of cabinets. It's the size (all the way to the ceiling) and the color in these photos that make a huge impact.
is that a working wood block or just a fancy wood surface? I've been considering getting a wood counter rather than a quartz one, but the wife doesn't want knife marks in throughout the counter. I can't imagine why... »
Robin Amorello, CKD CAPS - Atmoscaper Design That is a working butcher's block by John Boos. If you want to install wood tops in the kitchen, I'd be sure to keep a portable cutting board handy to avoid destroying the counter. Personally, if this were my kitchen, I would use that thick block for what it's intended.... Chopping... Kitchens need functioning work surfaces.
Kerrie L. Kelly Reminds me of the Solitaire Pendant by Niche Modern available at www.lumens.com .
The Niche Modern Solitaire Pendant designed by Jeremy Pyles is a charismatic lighting fixture that evokes a feel of eternal sophistication, thanks to its enticing geometric pattern and heartwarming radiance. Lovely on its own or in a cluster. The Solitaire Pendant features a blown-glass diffuser.
Waterfall counters needn't be relegated to strictly modern spaces. The mix of contemporary and traditional elements in this kitchen work together fluidly to give the room a timeless appeal.
The waterfall counter in the foreground is made from a natural limestone usually called Indus Gold. Limestone shares a lot of the finicky characteristics of marble, so if you're concerned about marble's patina, don't consider limestone. However, if you like the idea of a stone that will show its age, limestone's a terrific option.
Valerie knows that light is very important, and this large window in the kitchen brings in a great deal of natural light. She also used a mix of open shelving, cabinetry with solid doors and glass fronts (near the ceiling) to keep the kitchen looking open and bright.
Add a window. The addition of one simple window can be completed for relatively little hassle and cost. Look to the rooms that get the highest usage, and consider what natural light will do for the space (and your electricity bill).
No decroative architectural details at all? No worries! The dark-painted panes give the molding- and casing-free windows a sense of depth, not to mention architectural interest.
Most of the time, your wood countertops are just that — countertops. You should use a cutting board to protect your wood countertop or you'll end up with cut marks all over it. But if you want the warmth of wood and the functionality of a commercial food prep area, then consider a large butcher block as a portion of your countertop. Tip: If you'd like to chop your vegetables directly on your counterop, use mineral oil, which is safe for food. Olive oil or corn oil on your countertop can become rancid.
Kitchen designer Robin Amorello says that thick butcher block countertops, like this one in a contemporary loft kitchen, should be used for what they're intended: rolling pie dough, chopping and cutting vegetables and other ingredients, and other daily tasks."Kitchens need functioning work surfaces," she says. If you really want to keep your surface from getting completely worn, she recommends keeping a portable cutting board handy.
