Quezada Architecture Hmmm... I don't remember the exact color but it was a grey black grout pretty much the same color as the tile. It just look lighter in the photo.
floor material, pattern & varying size of tiles is beautiful - have not seen floor w/that much size variation. - how did designer come up w/this floor pattern. or lack of pattern? Love the random sizes. We need kitchen floor that will withstand heavy traffic - have worried about grout lines using tile or other material since grout stains/looks bad easily. Thought there must be a rule that grout spacing couldn't be narrow b/c of expansion/contraction since I've never seen narrow grout lines. Is this not true? Why are most grout lines wider? Also have heard slate is not recommended b/c of unevenness - is this type slate more uniform? It does not look uneven - it is beautiful, especially in contrast w/the wood. This is truly a beautiful application. »
Quezada Architecture Thank you for the nice compliment. The tiles are actually all the same size but what is making them look different sizes is the fact that there are stairs in the foreground. The tiles are 16 x 16 black slate which is one of the more uniformly thick slates. Some slates have a lot of cleft but this one is pretty smooth which is easier to work with for the tiny grout joints. The reason why grout joints are usually bigger is because it is much easier to install that way (read much cheaper as well). I don't think you need it for expansion... our joints are tiny and never had any issues. Hope that helps!
Quezada Architecture We bought the slate from American Slate Company. They have a showroom in San Francisco and locally for easy pick up. Not sure if they are a national company but I know they have several locations in the SF bay area.
While gray-toned wood walls are definitely a modern way to go, pairing cedar tone plank walls with gray flooring can work beautifully too. If the cedar is rough and/or rustic, go a bit more sleek on the floor with smooth, satin or matte finish slate or porcelain. The contrast between the wood and floor can be stunning.
Doors. Welcome your guests with a punch of contemporary style through oversized glass doors. The benefits go both ways: visitors will get a sneak peak at your gorgeous decor as they approach your home, and you get to soak in the beautiful view every day.
Stairs. The natural slip-resistance quality makes slate a smart choice for stairs. If you prefer a monochromatic look with very little color variation, you might like this dark, almost black slate ...
