The hillside overlooks expansive views of the city of Los Angeles. I created a garden with year-round interest and color supplied by grasses, mediterranean and Australian plants. There is a small recirculating brook that catches rain water.
The garden is terraced and features extensive edible plants including strawberries, fig, lemon, grapes, raspberries and avocado trees with drip irrigation. My client preserves fruit and makes jam from her garden. Design by Shirley Bovshow, EdenMakers Garden Design @

This arbor was designed with an arch shape and chunky hardware & decorative wooden overlays to reflect the country Italian style of the house. The shade cloth provides protection from the hot midday sun & helps keep the heat in from the gas heater. The fan helps cool diners as well as keeps the yellow jackets away. When the heater is on, it helps spread it down & around the table.

This vast hillside in San Anselmo, Northern California has evolved over the years and is the personal sanctuary of Landscape Designer Eileen Kelly, owner of Dig Your Garden Landscape Design. Succulents have always been one of Eileen's favorites for their dramatic textures and low-water needs. Design and Photos © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design http://www.digyourgarden.com

Because the sunniest place to grow vegetables is in the front yard, custom Cor-ten steel planters were designed as an attractive sculptural element, their graceful curves complementing the organic flow of the landscape. Informal gravel provides stable footing to walk and work, while remaining permeable to rain. Dwarf citrus grow in pots, and foundation plantings of Ribes sanguineum and Phormium 'Guardsman', and Ficus pumila vine anchor the home. Photo © Jude Parkinson-Morgan.
