A 1961 home with an under-eight-foot living room ceiling needed some freshening. We slanted the ceiling to match the roof pitch, and added a wall of bookshelves in the dining room. We gutted the kitchen and started over—complete with heated porcelain tile floor. A tiny bathroom had previously included a shower, which we replaced with a full-size vanity that features a striking vessel sink. Relighting the living room required new wiring. Our project manager suggested carrying the existing theme of arched door openings into several of the remodeling details.

This chestnut colored bamboo floor is the hardest type of bamboo available. You can hit it with a hammer and it won't dent! The product comes in a click-lock construction, so you can roll out a layer of cork cushion underneath it. The product works well in 1970s home retro-fit because it works well with the darker stain colors of trim from the 70s and 80s.

The centerpiece of the house, into which the new entry leads, and off of which all other entertaining rooms connect, is the Mad-Men-inspired living room, with hideaway bar closet, sassy pop-of-color chairs in sumptuous tangerine velvet, plenty of seating for guests, prominent displays of modern art, and a grand piano upon which to play music of course, as well as against which to lean fabulously, resting one’s elbow, with a drink in one’s other hand.

The “Cloud” as it was termed during design, was originally a three part brass room divider in the original home. We chose to powder coat one part an iridescent white and suspend it from the vaulted ceiling of the lounge. Two monorails flank the cloud with telescoping heads that shine light through the grid to cast interesting shadow patterns on the room below. The other two parts of the brass screen were re-purposed and redesigned as the exterior gate between driveway and breezeway. They too were powder coated and match the exterior colors of the home.
