The rustic ranch look of knotty cedar fencing gets a contemporary twist in our design of this Chelsea rooftop garden. This fencing gives some much needed privacy from a common roof, while the black and tan pergola casts a bit of welcome shade for seating on a sunny south-facing roof. Additional design elements include artificial turf, contemporary outdoor furniture, black fiberglass planters, and geometric custom lattices. When we first saw this roof garden’s existing pavers, they were very weathered and benefited greatly from a power washing to help clean and brighten them up, which made them look brand new again. Plantings include wisteria, clematis, and Patriot hostas. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.

A contemporary NYC rooftop garden featuring black fiberglass planters filled with sky pencil hollies, Knockout roses, and rose of sharon. For a bit of contrast, we’ve also added red Japanese maples in burgundy Asian ceramic pots. The pots are topped with black polished river stones that help to camouflage the irrigation and up-lighting lines that run throughout all the planters. Outdoor rugs are a great way to break up a long space and make it feel more cozy and inviting. Plantings include red Japanese maples, ornamental grasses, boxwoods, junipers, Knockout roses, and flowering annuals. The concrete-blend paver stones are set on raised pedestals that allow water and air to pass through. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

We kept the plants low to keep the view open on this rooftop terrace garden overlooking Central Park in Manhattan's Clinton neighborhood.. Bamboo roll fencing adds some color and dimension to an otherwise bland looking brick wall. A large mirror provides visual interest and makes the space feel larger. Comfy, modern furnishings add to the eclectic feel of this garden. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

We created the feeling of depth and abundance in this cozy West Village, NYC rooftop terrace through the use of layered plantings and staggered heights of plants and planters. We also placed some planters on top of classical looking stone columns, which further added to the effect. This garden also features wicker furniture, grey fiberglass planters, dimpled Asian ceramics, and lush plantings of Japanese maples, junipers, dogwoods, rhododendrons, margarita vines, and flowering annuals. We designed this contemporary roof deck in TriBeCa, NYC with custom planters, a pergola to provide much needed shade, horizontal fencing, a stainless steel heat lamp to keep warm on cool nights, and metal-trimmed furniture. For the custom-built wood elements in this garden, we used an opaque tan paint. The benefit to using a solid paint color instead of a stain is that it doesn't have to be re-applied every year, and it helps preserve the wood for much longer. Work involved creating a new under garden basement with glass rooflights shown here. Glass cube covers the staircase to the basement and frameless bi-folding glass doors open up the house and create a complete outdoor indoor living space within.

Chelsea Creek is the pinnacle of sophisticated living, these penthouse collection gardens, featuring stunning contemporary exteriors are London’s most elegant new dockside development, by St George Central London, they are due to be built in Autumn 2014
Following on from the success of her stunning contemporary Rooftop Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, Patricia Fox was commissioned by St George to design a series of rooftop gardens for their Penthouse Collection in London. Working alongside Tara Bernerd who has designed the interiors, and Broadway Malyon Architects, Patricia and her team have designed a series of London rooftop gardens, which although individually unique, have an underlying design thread, which runs throughout the whole series, providing a unified scheme across the development.
Inspiration was taken from both the architecture of the building, and from the interiors, and Aralia working as Landscape Architects developed a series of Mood Boards depicting materials, features, art and planting. This groundbreaking series of London rooftop gardens embraces the very latest in garden design, encompassing quality natural materials such as corten steel, granite and shot blasted glass, whilst introducing contemporary state of the art outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, water features and green walls. Garden Art also has a key focus within these London gardens, with the introduction of specially commissioned pieces for stone sculptures and unique glass art. The linear hard landscape design, with fluid rivers of under lit glass, relate beautifully to the linearity of the canals below.
The design for the soft landscaping schemes were challenging – the gardens needed to be relatively low maintenance, they needed to stand up to the harsh environment of a London rooftop location, whilst also still providing seasonality and all year interest. The planting scheme is linear, and highly contemporary in nature, evergreen planting provides all year structure and form, with warm rusts and burnt orange flower head’s providing a splash of seasonal colour, complementary to the features throughout.
Finally, an exquisite lighting scheme has been designed by Lighting IQ to define and enhance the rooftop spaces, and to provide beautiful night time lighting which provides the perfect ambiance for entertaining and relaxing in.
Aralia worked as Landscape Architects working within a multi-disciplinary consultant team which included Architects, Structural Engineers, Cost Consultants and a range of sub-contractors.

This tiered garden drops 5' in elevation over its 40' depth. To provide a large outdoor entertaining space, tiered patio spaces were created, and surrounded with glass railings to maintain a wide open appeal. The antique brick of the house was matched in the planter walls and then steel beams and cladding were added to create a contemporary industrial feel. A small green space in the bottom of the garden is surrounded by a Beech hedge and features a water weir. Artificial sod was used to surface this heavily shaded space under a canopy of century oaks.
