Mountain Concepts
The original objective was to design an efficient, mountain contemporary cabin with emphasis on light, layout and landscape. Each form delivers natural light to its respective space while contributing to the composition as a whole. Local granite flows in and out bringing the natural environment into the home. A detached pavilion and covered patios with opening wall doors provide living area for all seasons. The low pitch contemporary shed roof forms balance with the mountain gables and timber details. The contemporary roof forms bathe the rustic stone and wood material palate in sunlight creating a warm, inviting space. Photo by Matt Waclo.

A contemporary NYC rooftop garden featuring black fiberglass planters filled with sky pencil hollies, Knockout roses, and rose of sharon. For a bit of contrast, we’ve also added red Japanese maples in burgundy Asian ceramic pots. The pots are topped with black polished river stones that help to camouflage the irrigation and up-lighting lines that run throughout all the planters. This 3200 square foot second home sits on 10 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley. I incorporated some forms and details from traditional English country cottages but with a contemporary interpretation. A metal roof, steel windows, and crisp detailing combined with the warmth of hardwood flooring and exterior stone makes the home sophisticated and comfortable. Several terraces and a screened porch expand the living areas into the adjacent gardens.

Green roof in full sun is harder than in the shade.
Sterilized shale is used here over slightly sloped rubber membrane with sedum plants plugged into shale and then watered with drip irrigation for first two summers depending on rain amount. Garden fence holds back deer, rabbits and ground hogs. Roof scuppers provide water to the butterfly garden. Raised beds mean less bending over and better weed control.

This custom roof deck in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood features lightweight aluminum decking, ipe planters, an ipe and metal pergola, and ipe benches with built-in storage under the seats. Few woods can match the natural beauty of ipe (pronounced ee-pey), a hardwood with a 30-year life expectancy. These pictures were taken in early spring, before the leaves have filled out on the trees. Plantings include coralbark maples, hornbeams, pink cherry trees, crape myrtles, and feather grasses. The planters include LED up-lighting and automated drip irrigation lines. Read more about our projects on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

These eye-catching red lacquer fiberglass planters gave this terrace garden a much needed splash of color. To give her wicker seating area more privacy from nearby buildings, we planted tall evergreen arborvitaes in charcoal-colored fiberglass pots. The deck is a Trex composite deck, which is approved for fire safety by the NYC Department of Buildings. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

This contemporary looking roof garden was designed for a bachelor's loft in Soho. We chose to soften the hard lines of the corrugated metal siding and contemporary furnishings with lush looking plantings in glazed Asian ceramic pots. The deck is comprised of interlocking deck tiles, a less expensive and simpler to install alternative to a custom-built deck. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.
