The Eagle Harbor Cabin is located on a wooded waterfront property on Lake Superior, at the northerly edge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about 300 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
The wooded 3-acre site features the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior, a lake that sometimes behaves like the ocean. The 2,000 SF cabin cantilevers out toward the water, with a 40-ft. long glass wall facing the spectacular beauty of the lake. The cabin is composed of two simple volumes: a large open living/dining/kitchen space with an open timber ceiling structure and a 2-story “bedroom tower,” with the kids’ bedroom on the ground floor and the parents’ bedroom stacked above.
The interior spaces are wood paneled, with exposed framing in the ceiling. The cabinets use PLYBOO, a FSC-certified bamboo product, with mahogany end panels. The use of mahogany is repeated in the custom mahogany/steel curvilinear dining table and in the custom mahogany coffee table. The cabin has a simple, elemental quality that is enhanced by custom touches such as the curvilinear maple entry screen and the custom furniture pieces. The cabin utilizes native Michigan hardwoods such as maple and birch. The exterior of the cabin is clad in corrugated metal siding, offset by the tall fireplace mass of Montana ledgestone at the east end.
The house has a number of sustainable or “green” building features, including 2x8 construction (40% greater insulation value); generous glass areas to provide natural lighting and ventilation; large overhangs for sun and snow protection; and metal siding for maximum durability. Sustainable interior finish materials include bamboo/plywood cabinets, linoleum floors, locally-grown maple flooring and birch paneling, and low-VOC paints.
DUCHATEAU Floors
Horwitz Residence designed by Minarc
*The house is oriented so that all of the rooms can enjoy the outdoor living area which includes Pool, outdoor dinning / bbq and play court.
• The flooring used in this residence is by DuChateau Floors - Terra Collection in Zimbabwe. The modern dark colors of the collection match both contemporary & traditional interior design
• It’s orientation is thought out to maximize passive solar design and natural ventilations, with solar chimney escaping hot air during summer and heating cold air during winter eliminated the need for mechanical air handling.
• Simple Eco-conscious design that is focused on functionality and creating a healthy breathing family environment.
• The design elements are oriented to take optimum advantage of natural light and cross ventilation.
• Maximum use of natural light to cut down electrical cost.
• Interior/exterior courtyards allows for natural ventilation as do the master sliding window and living room sliders.
• Conscious effort in using only materials in their most organic form.
• Solar thermal radiant floor heating through-out the house
• Heated patio and fireplace for outdoor dining maximizes indoor/outdoor living. The entry living room has glass to both sides to further connect the indoors and outdoors.
• Floor and ceiling materials connected in an unobtrusive and whimsical manner to increase floor plan flow and space.
• Magnetic chalkboard sliders in the play area and paperboard sliders in the kids' rooms transform the house itself into a medium for children's artistic expression.
• Material contrasts (stone, steal, wood etc.) makes this modern home warm and family

Matarozzi Pelsinger Builders
Complete renovation of 5th floor condominium on the top of Nob Hill. The revised floor plan required a complete demolition of the existing finishes. Careful consideration of the other building residents and the common areas of the building were priorities all through the construction process. This project is most accurately defined as ultra contemporary. Some unique features of the new architecture are the cantilevered glass shelving, the frameless glass/metal doors, and Italian custom cabinetry throughout.

We chose a dynamic material palette of encaustic concrete tiles for the floor and locally hand-made ceramic tiles for the walls. Painted, rough-sawn beams create visual interest on the ceiling. The counters are solid, thick walnut slabs from locally felled trees.

Storage abounds in this walnut and white gloss cabinetry kitchen. The contrast between the two finishes creates drama and definition to specific functional areas. The island features sliding doors that have a copper basketweave pattern encased in resin to add texture and interest. The bar height eating area is perfect for late night treats or a quick breakfast.

Natural light gives this master bath a serene quality. The tub deck pierces the glass enclosure to become a shower bench. The pebble shower floor offers an organic visual contrast to the modern tile of the walls and floor.
