I don't think there is enough room for stools.

I think the easiest fix would be art like the bird art/hang the tv.

Then, place either on the console (if enough room) or on the floor a couple of very tall narrow vases. Done.

Wow, your space is coming along nicely! I absolutely LOVE the art you chose - where did you find it?

I agree that a larger/longer console with some shelves would really fill the space, and that the art over the tv is a little small. We did the lighting for this space, but here's an idea that came to mind:

FOR IT COMES FROM PARADISE,
AND IS HERE WITHIN…A DREAM

Cobalt
Blue
With its finest hue,

Provides
A very treat
For you.

A veritable paradise,
Of
Sights
There
So see,

With its perfect
Luster,

Which
Provides
Of what,

Is
Heaven-ly.

Deep and dark

It makes of glassware,

A portal unto bliss,

Or placed there so on porcelain,

It makes a sight
You wouldn’t miss.

Cobalt blue
With its perfect hue.

Is only
But,
What is your due.

Given by His Lordship.

Given unto thee.

Cobalt blue,
For hearts
So
True.

It’s
His
Gift,
For me and you.

So enjoy
Its luster.

So enjoy its sheen,

For it comes from Paradise,

And is
Here,
Within

A
Dream.

Ditch the "yellow" bulbs and get the "daylight" bulbs. Trust me on this one. You might have to go to a hardware store and not Wallyworld on this, but you'll get the help you need in finding the bulbs. These light bulbs don't cost any more than any of the others. LED bulbs are another way, but they are pricier.

I have a little footstool spot in the kitchen and use it to access the top cupboards.
Stuff that goes in there: baking trays (don't bake that often); indian idli dishes, woven bread baskets, and extra mug storage for when the coffee days go into overdrive.

Now that I know where Mark BIschak keeps his chocolate I will remember to bring my footstool!

I can't seem to find too many images of full shelves behind sofas. I think the trend of going toward the picture rail (the mini-shelf to hold images) was meant to avoid the head-hitting scenarios. ;) I'm sure you can do it, but they may have to be much higher above the sofa...and finding images might be harder. There are tons of floating shelf images in bedrooms, nurseries, kitchens, and offices though! :)

Thank you for this article. I love our dining room which opens onto our living room/music room. In the afternoons and evenings my elderly mother sits in the living room. I have started using the dining room as an office for two reasons. One, I like working there and 2, my custom window treatment workroom in my bonus room over the garage is crammed, so there is not enough space there. What I don't like is the fact that my dining room is always full of my work stuff and looks messy. Plus, we eat in there. So I am trying to find ways to make these two rooms multifunctional. I need a way to store my work stuff so that it isn't taking over. Am open to suggestions. I'll probably look for a desk that will fit into a corner of the living room where I can put everything when I'm not working.

I really liked that the home is reflective of the homeowners and that it actually looks lived in. While I enjoy color inside and out, with the majority of it outside, I salute the decision not to compete with the outside. If you've got views and color, they can become your "art on the walls." I like it! Get some beautiful blue lamps to really bring the color from the painting above your bed. I think the nightstand would be nice, as well as the white shag rug. But definitely focus on bringing in some pops of color with that painting! :)

I would also take a colour from 'the painting...but ...I would personally not go for the white rug as it won't be white for long...they tend to yellow off themselves if is synthetic. and just daily use will make it off white... If you are willing to regularly dryclean it ...it will be fine but that is not a cheap thing to do... Also, put one or two cushions in the painting colour on the bed also, this will tie all the colours together.

Nice clean slate to work with. I suggest you find bed linens you like that coordinate with your beautiful artwork and decorate around the bed linens. In my photoshopped image of your room, I used new bed linens, lowered your artwork, removed the shelf, painted an accent wall behind the bed, and added a table lamp that repeats the geometrics of your bedside table. I, too, am not a fan of a white shag rug because of the "get dirty fast" factor, but it would be pretty in this room and would add some wonderful softness.

@Paul B.Showers, I agree. Another advantage of tiny-house building is that it is a great way to get some tool skills, experience in design and construction, and a hands-on education about all the various systems that must come together to create a fully-functional home. As I've said elsewhere, this kind of construction takes a lot of practice to get to the point that you can build a really long-term, fully-liveable space. But it also has the advantage of perhaps convincing some people that DIY building is just not for them -- that their time and their money might be more efficiently spent in a more conventional space, be it large or small. No shame in that; building a dwelling of any size is not as easy as some people might make it look.

My only problem with a tiny house is the loft bed. I'd fall out. Or even worse, I'd need to tinkle in the middle of the night, miss the ladder, fall and lose bladder control. Not to mention that I'm just too old and fat to want to climb up to a loft bed in the first place. lol

I agree with studioforma...highlight the 2 story aspect of your foyer! It's so beautiful and open. Adding a staggered light fixture will add more light when light isn't coming through that top window, and also add something in that space to really fill the room up without overcrowding it.

Nice entry there, and I will definitely agree with Shakuff, above. You really need a big chandelier or long ceiling lighting to make the space more bright and rich! Also, as you love the pictures, you should hang a lot of large framed ones on the wall, on stairs. A great round rug, and of course the entry console with a mirror-you can add two table lamps and a painting if you don't want the mirror. Hope you enjoy the pics and find some nice ideas for your home! jk

Absolutely LOVE your high ceilings! I think a beautiful staggered chandelier would really fill the space. Art on those bare walls will help too. Flair Lighting has some great ideas - the fireplace is usually the focal point of a room, maybe bring the couches or some of the seating closer to that for a more cozy feel.

Personally, I prefer Dulux (trade) to any other paint; it applies easier and has so many shades that you are spoilt for choice.
We had a painter-decorator who told us he hates F&B on fresh plaster - apparently it takes at least 3 coats to give it a nice finish.

Oh I can't wait to see photos of the finished product...that's one of my favorite color combos. It's going to be beautiful! :)

A thoughtful and beautiful renovation! I just hope the owners will consider placing art or antique mirrors above the two fireplace mantels- it seems like something is missing. Also, I know the 3rd floor railing is original to the home (and quite lovely), but its height would make me extremely nervous with small children afoot...

I like the idea of a slipcover for your chairs, or just reupholstered in a different color. Definitely get a light fixture that highlights your beautiful high ceilings! We've custom-made chandeliers for many a dining room table, many a style. But these 2 speak to me for you ;)
The glass is great because they glisten in the natural light by the windows when they're not even on. :)

Make sure you protect your new dining set from fading with some window film. The sun looks pretty intense in your picture and I would hate to see your new furniture damaged from the sun. Visit www.vista-films.com to find a professional near you.

Less is more :-) The vases look good there, shells not necessary.

I think if you keep the pendants simple it should be no problem, I guess you need the ones over the table more but I don't think you have to choose.

Agreed - photos of the space and your current chandelier would help! I feel like you would need something over the dining table more than the living, but you can definitely make it work!
