While I completely understand that desire to have some "character" to the finish that makes cabinetry feel a little more artisan crafted; it does make me smile a little when clients say a factory painted finish is "too perfect". Some of the oldest and most respected cabinet manufacturers in the country have spent millions of dollars over the last 70 years figuring out how, through innovative machinery and best practices, to remove flaws from their finishes. I guess knowing this, I really enjoy running my hands over a flawless painted finish and knowing that it's going to look just as good 20 years from now as it does today. In itself that finish is a sign of fine craftsmanship.

Some clients will ask about the ability to re-finish factory finished cabinets... (in my mind that is a little bit like asking if you can re-finish a Steinway piano? - you can but why in the world would you ever want to??). This question is generally born out of our previous bad experiences with poor locally applied finishes that craze, chip, peel and discolor over time. A well chosen cabinet finish can easily stay relavant as styles and other finishes in the kitchen change.

I could not agree more with you Shylo! It amazes me how many "custom" cabinet makers there are here in Southern California. I would never go with a local shop if I could get custom from a manufacturer that has been in business for over 70 years. Their machinery is top notch not to mention the lifetime warranty that you get with your cabinets.
